First pacemaker check up

Hi I have my first pacemaker check next week (four and an half weeks on from implant) and was just wondering what to expect. I haven’t been given loads of info as everything happened very quickly - including discharge!

Do they usually include a wound check and X ray or is it just about tweaking? Maybe it depends on the clinic but maybe there’s a protocol! I have a lot of questions so hope they are patient! Many thanks for any insight into what happened to you!

they will look at the data from your pacemaker and possibly tweak things depending on what they find. You wouldn’t normally get an x ray . If you’re worried about lead displacement they would be able to tell via the data from your pacemaker.

Thank you. I wasn’t sure how much data they can see and what that can tell them!

Usually over very quickly,a few sticky pads ,in vital places, reading on a machine, all over in ten to fifteen minutes, been having that ,for twenty years, every ,year theres an improvement in the procedure.

Worry ye not.

Once you have had the procedure, you will cease to worry, good luck.

It's a doddle - nothing to worry about, and the guys who do the check are happy to answer any questions.

I’ve had a pacemaker for three years and I go to the Hospital every year for a check up There us nothing to be feared The technician just uses a hand held device which is connected to a monitor. The hold it over your pacemaker site for maybe a minute and they can tell if it’s working properly .They can also tell you how many incidents you have had atrial fib or other problems .Last time I went they just held the monitor over my clothing .No sweat !Takes only a few minutes I hope this helps and you begin to feel better

I had my first one last week, and it was fine, with mine they no longer even hold the device over the pacemaker, it's all done remotely as is the monitoring (I have a machine by my bed that sends all the data every evening).

Mine took longer as they had a registrar in with them and were teaching him what to do (he got the device and held it over my pacemaker site and they told him they didn't have to do it any more which is how I know).

They asked me what medication I was on, checked the site of the wound, asked me a few questions and then tweaked the settings a bit and said if I didn't like it ring them and then they would alter it back.

I asked them questions and they were more than happy to answer them, and as things are remote now, they said they would see me in three years! But to ring them at any time if I had any questions, and if anything wasn't ok they would ring me asap! Any they gave me another pacemaker card

All very pleasant and relaxed.

Hi, orbitalgirl

I was just about to add an update as I also had my check last week. From almost everything you said (apart from holding the device over my PM) i wonder if we are with the team at the same hospital!!

Anyway, mine also went well and I felt they were very thorough with lots of time for questions and explanations. All they tweaked was the voltage for now.

I'm in York, whereabouts are you?

Ah, I’m a lot further south. It’s just that I also had a ‘trainee’ with the main dr and it all sounded very similar!
