Hello everyone. Just wondered if anyone else has suffered hair loss due to heart meds? I’m on bisoprol, Spironolactone, dapagliflozine and ramipril and have noticed recently that my hair seems to come out easier than it used to. I know you lose so many hairs a day and age can be a factor (I’m nearly 60) but it just seems that more is coming out. Anyone else had that happen? Thanks 😊

Hair loss due to meds?
Hello
Personally so far and I say so far I seem to be ok I am 60 but I have read that others have had this issue and could be due to one of the meds
It could be worth talking with your Doctor if this is a side effect from one of them they might offer to change it for something else
I hope others will come along and reply that have had this experience and give you some better advice x
Thank you for that BeKind28. I hope you’re doing ok. X😊
yes my hair brush has got more hair than me I’m on bisoprol, and it’s affected my hearing !!!!!
Spironolactone promotes hair growth as a side effect so its not that one causing your hair loss. Good luck in fi ding the cause and sorting it out.
Hey. Yes I have had this too. I used to have thick almost waist length curly hair. Since I started all my meds 2 years ago it's thin and I've had to cut most of it off. I take bisprolol, furosemide, warfarin, dapagliflozin and entresto. I've mentioned it to my heart nurse a few times but she has no idea x
I have been losing a lot of hair as well. I spoke to my GP who prescribed me zinc tablets. They seemed to help a little. I also spoke to my cardiologist who said it was the Bisoprolol, but as that the was Rolls Royce of tablets unless it really bothered me to try a persevere. I have a 2 inch x 1 inch bald patch on the nape of my neck now. Not great for a 55 year old female but at least I have long hair to cover it.
Yes, my hair has thinned noticeably since I have taken AF meds. I think I read on here that it’s the anticoagulant, for me Apixaban but I believe they all have the potential to cause hair loss.
Hi ThumperYes, my hair has gone so thin -ive been on bisoprolol for 12 years and am a similar age to you. So, it could be that is the culprit. Although it might have happened due to age 🤷
I've also found that my sense of smell has gone, which I assume is the bisoprolol too. How are you smelling? 🤣
Have a lovely day
Knit it x
I only lost my sense of smell following Covid. My husband and I caught Covid right at the beginning before all the symptoms were known. My husband had all the normal symptoms but I had what I thought was sinusitis along the left side of my face. For the first week I could only smell an awful smell and on swallowing there was an awful taste. Two weeks later I realised I had lost all sense of smell. Three years later I think I’ve got most of my sense of smell back , though sometimes someone will say something about a smell which I can’t smell. Again some of the medications we take will react differently.
All these medications affect each of us so differently. I’ve experienced the opposite. I’ve been on Bisoprolol for 21 years since I was 45. I’m lucky that I’ve always thick, wavy hair. It’s still thick though I believe I’ve lost some but it’s got so much curlier. Over the years I have gone for shorter and shorter hair. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.
I've noticed more hair loss in the last month. I have been on only bisoprolol for about 10 months. I spoke to my pharmacist and she said it is a well known side effect 😢
After my HA I started losing a lot of hair. My HF nurse said it was probably the Bisoprolol. Fortunately the hair loss stopped after a few months. As yours is continuing, you could ask if you could switch to one of the other lols - I’m now on Carvedilol.
Try some blood tests to see if hair loss is alopecia or otherwise related situation which could help ease worry and then gp could go from there to help ease your worry ..worry and stress can also be a factor I know it's worry cycle hair loss .. worry etc but it might help I did this and sometimes reassurance etc can help towards this I'm a few years fro you and yes age etc menopause can do this too..
As we age, collagen and calcium deplete, so supplementing those could help, both for skin and hair. Massaging the head too, to stimulate the scalp will also increase the blood supply, tot he skin, so in the absence of any definitive answer, those are my suggestions!
After being hospitalised with flu in January my hair started coming out alarmingly. I started a regime of Zinc and VitC tablets, taken last thing at night. Happy to see that my hair is growing back now. Just to add many years ago I suffered from Alopecia for about 12 years and wore a wig. Despite seeing trichologist I found taking Zinc and VitC eventually restored my hair growth HTH
I’m on 5 BP/HR related pills ( post virus that cannot be named), bisoprolol being the last added about a year a go, and have hair loss. Have had it twice before ( due to septic shock, and low hypothyroid mins/vits) and got it regrowing 6 months or so later with zinc, ferritin etc supplementing, but doesn’t seem to be happening this time. Not aware that bisoprolol might be the cause!
Hi
I suffered hair loss and other side effects when I was put on enalapril for 4 months. Came off it in April and changed to Entresto and it appears to be growing back though not on the crown of my head. Put on Spironolactone which has a side effect of hair growth but that effected my kidneys and blood pressure so had to come off it. I sympathise it is hard to cope with hair loss on top of everything else!
Most pharmacists could tell you that hair loss is a known side-effect some beta-blockers like Bisoprolol - they would also beable to tell you if any of your other meds might have this effect and suggest altenartive which you could be switched to
if a change of meds does not change the situation you should be seeing your GP about other possible causes, there are many, including the "ever guilty" issue of stress
i hope you find the answer to your problem soon
Hi. I started to lose my hair after heart surgery. My hairdresser says it’s common and that we also go through hair loss cycles too. My hair comes out quite a bit still but apparently there’s lots of new growth. My hair has slowly come back but now I have ringlets which is really strange as I always had straight hair before. I used to take biotin and zinc to help but my hair is back to it’s usual thickness 2 years after ohs. I’m on 10mg bisoprolol and other heart meds. Xx
HiWhen I had my double cabg I started losing hair. It was really upsetting. My cardiologistvsaid it was all the neuro transmitters that ate affected after the op and that it would just take time for everything to get nick to normal. I am in bisoprolol but have not heard it causing hair loss?? I think.your best bet is asking your GP or cardio team. There may be a link but nest to ask the experts. Try hard NOT to ask DR Google!!!
Since I started on heart medication nearly 5 years ago my hair has got really thin. I keep it very short because I don't think it's as noticeable. The only med. we have in common is Bisoprolol
I have the same issueIt was really bad when I was on Ezetimibe 10mg. Or it could have been trauma from having a very bad reaction from being on a statin when taking antibiotics. It caused me to develop rhabdomyolysis which could have shut down my kidneys and liver.
It calmed down a lot but i still lose more than feels normal but not bad enough to go to my dr's. I am on Bisoprolol too.
Might consider going to gp to see if zink or something might help.
Hope some of that helps and all works out well for you
Vicky
Hi yes its happened to me at the front, like I have a receding hairline and I'm very self conscious as your hair is your crown. I take ramipril and bisoprolol, after heart failure 20yrs ago ( I'm 57 now) but I don't think its that medication in my case. Hitting the menopause is one factor and I'm pretty sure it's also taking methotrexate for arthritis. My hair was so thick and naturally curly people thought it was permed!!it was proper ringlets like afro Caribbean hair. Now its so thin has no curl at all until my friend uses a curling wand!! Devastating isn't even the way I feel 😪 I lost my confidence through this and even went into depression 😞 I tend to brush my hair every couple of days after I've used alot of argan oil and don't tie it up so tight. I could only tie my in a scrunching 2 times, now its 4.I've got that plantur shampoo, leave in conditioner, even thought of buying a wig like it used to be.
I'm sorry I've waffled on but I had to reply to say I know what you are going through. Good luck in trying oils etc and take care Wendy x
yes I noticed hair loss. I hardly ever lost much hair, think it was Apixaban that makes my hair come out . Luckily I have a hood head of hair. I used some hair restorer on a friends recommendation, not sure if it helped or not.
Yes I seem to be losing hair since being on bisoprolol. Lucky enough I have thick hair so it’s not a big issue but could be for others. Trouble is most drugs have side effects while keeping us going. I have heart failure, the tablets do help. Take care.
Hi. I have noticed that since I have started taking Apixoban the sink and hairbrush seem to have a lot more hairs in them! My sister has been on Bisoprolol for 20 years and has had no problems. I’m just hoping the hair loss won’t get worse ! 🤞🙏
Hi Thumper76, I am on a few heart meds too but had a loss problem long before HA in 2020. I swear by Biotin (vitamin B7), as it slows the hair loss down. I have been taking it for about 5 years now, at the suggestion of my dermatologist. Hope this may help.
