Hair Loss using Bisoprolol Fumurate

I am a vain 74 year old male who had a Cardioversion on the 6th March and was prescribed Bisoprolol by the Doctors. All went well until a couple of weeks ago when my hair started thinning. I (obviously) Googled and read that the hair does thin but does not all fall out (apparently).

I just wondered whether anyone has any experience. Thank you.

Hi Mike,

I can say my hair has gotten thinner since taking Bisoprolol, but I am also peri menopausal too.

So I am holding a double edged sword here, I think.

My hair suffers from stress related alopecia, I am also of the age to suffer "lady moments" so unsure if Bisoporol is my nemesis. Fingers crossed for you

I'm 63, female and went through The Change early - my hair was already thinning before I went on Bisoprolol 1.25mg once a day and if anything, the thinning has slowed rather than increased. Too, 'thinning' after aged 50 seems to run in my family for the men and women. My son is 38 and is beginning to see thinning (and some receding, he's not happy).

Just part of ageing so aside from using a shampoo that promises to 'plump' hair and then blow-drying with the airstream pointing from the bottom to the top (rather than pointing it at the crown and working downwards - give the upwards method a go, it does give some nice lift), I don't let it worry me and unless you're seeing scalp through your hair, you probably shouldn't either. Believe me I know it can be distressing to see a once glorious mane go thin but all things considered, it beats the alternative (not being here at all).

Depending on how long you like to keep your hair, cut can make a difference as well - short cut layers in longer hair can increase the appearance of thicker hair. Once the hair salons reopen, check around for a stylist who understands thinning hair and can give you a layered cut.

I am also on Bisoprolol, before my `cardiac incident` my hair was thinning too. I have not seen any difference since taking the medication, although it has only been 6 weeks. I understand your concern about thinning hair, I talk to my hair dresser about getting a wig. She laughed at me and said we can give you a hair cut that will help. I settled for a long pixie cut and love it.

Stick with it, my hair is thicker and seems to grow fast, I need a haircut every 4 weeks, I should get a haircut on prescription with the amount of extra money it’s costing.........haha

Yes I experienced similar when on Bisoprolol. I was only on 1.25 mg per day after my op for a few months, my hair (short) wasn't falling out in clumps but it was all over my shoulders and clothes, I was getting quite concerned. I packed it up after 6 months, it's now 9 months and it has stopped completely, thank goodness.

Indeed, the hair thins and can fall out. It should not fall in large quantities, but it depends on how badly you have suffered from cardioversion. My father also suffered from quite severe cardioversion. Because he is already over 50 years old, his hair fell out so badly that he reached large hairless parts on his head. Even though he is 50 years old, he looks terrific, and he was bothered by the fact that he didn't have enough hair. That's why he had a hair transplant at a Turkish clinic. I hope it's not like in my father's case. It shouldn't be. But it's best to see a doctor regularly.
