I have been taking bisoprolol for approximately two months a very low dose .25mg and feel worse than I did prior to starting . They were prescribed to me for possible microvascular angina but has not helped. Two weeks ago I had a repeat angiogram done to see if there were any blockages that were missed on the one I had done in April and everything looked clear. I’m Exhausted by four in the afternoon and in the last couple of weeks, I am having more chest tightness for longer periods of time. I will be contacting my cardiologist on Monday And already have an appointment with my family doctor Momday to discuss this . I’m just curious whether anyone experienced worsening symptoms while on this medication. I have also read that it can cause heart conditions that you didn’t previously have, not sure how accurate that is. This is giving me a bit of anxiety.

feeling worse on bisoprolol
I have another type of angina/ ischaemia non obstructive coronary arteries ANOCA/ INOCA, vasospastic angina.
I was given beta blockers many years ago, when I was presumed to have microvascular angina.
I then had a functional angiogram using acetylcholine. I had coronary vasospasms, my diagnosis of vasospastic angina was then confirmed.
I ended up in coronary care with unstable angina after taking the beta blockers.
I later learned that beta blockers should be used with caution if you have vasospastic angina.
I suggest you ask for the appriopriate testing to determine whether microvascular or vasospastic angina could be causing your ongoing symptoms .
I posted this link to the Canadian Women's Heart Health Alliance which you may find helpful.
I have been taking Bisoprolol for about 7 years now, since just prior to my bi pass surgery. I was initially on the same dose as you but it was increased to double in 2021 after having 2 stents fitted.
Maybe I am lucky but have never had any side effects from Bisoprolol at all, either the low or higher dose.
It can be very difficult knowing the cause of any side effects, whether it is the Bisoprolol itself or whether it has an adverse effect when mixed with some other medication.
It can be a matter of trial and error.
Bisoprolol is not the only Beta Blocker (if that's why you are taking it) about, so ask for an alternative to see if that is the cause.
hi there thanks for your reply. I just went back and read your bio and it sounds exactly like my history. In April 2024 I was fitted with a stent for a 90% blockage in my LAD… This was after four years of back-and-forth to doctors saying something was not right. I had nuclear CT , and nuclear stress tests done twice over the four years and finally the second time revealed a blockage. Unfortunately, the stent did not resolve the chest pain issues so I am still trying to sort that out, which is why it was put on a beta block would help with possible Microvascular angina , it has not . I will ask about alternative medication’s and find out what next steps are in January . My family was excellent listening to me and commented thank God you were persistent.
I am the cheerleader for Bisoprolol, I take 10 gms a day and have done for over 10 yrs , It’s.my lifesaver and has kept me going without any visits to A&E , I have had permanent AF , which was first spotted 56 yrs ago .
There seems to be a fear factor attached to Biso and I do not know why , but anxiety seems to set in when good old Biso is mentioned . I am 83 and due to set off on an amazing holiday half way round the world. .
Breesha… thank you for your reply. It’s wonderful you have had such a great response to bisoprolol. I’m not saying it’s causing my issues, but due to the fact it’s the newest addition to my medication lineup , it makes me wonder and requires further investigation . As well, it hasn’t addressed the issue it was prescribed for. Have a wonderful trip !
