Bisoprolol & Alcohol

I take 2.5mg of bisoprolol daily. I've never consumed alcohol while taking it. But I do miss the odd christmas baileys. So with that in mind and the festive season round the corner I was wondering about whether or not to have a tipple or two over christmas.

Has anyone else had a small drinky while taking it and if so did it cause any problems or side effects or were you ok.

Thanks in advance.

I am on 2.5mg Bisoprolol and enjoy the occasional Gin and Tonic or a beer. I have not noticed any side effects from that to be honest!

I have the odd few drinks maybe every two weeks nowadays on average id say. Ive never felt any ill effevts apart from fweling hungover of course. Everyone is different though.

I started by seeing how i was after having a pint. Then i had 3 on another occasion. The most i have had is 5 in one evening and that was enough for me.

I used to have 8 or 10 pints on friday or Saturday night but i find 3 or 4 is enough now.

I try to keep alcohol to weekends only, or if I'm away on holiday. I only drink wine, but it can be quite strong. I was dismayed when I recently had to go back on bisoprolol, doubled up to 2.5 now. I decided one has to live one's life, but I am watching for any effects carefully. It is hard to tell as this medication saps my energy and I feel more tired than usual. Just to add in case it helps, I find 0% lager/beer palatable and gives you a drink to hold in your hand. Strangely I don't like 'real' lager or beer.

No I was never really struck on the taste of lager or cider. Or wine for that matter. Spirits used to be my thing.

If you're not already accustomed to having bisoprolol and alcohol, be aware that alcohol may increase the blood-pressure lowering effect of the medication. This could make you dizzy/ light headed/ faint. Too much alcohol can have other effects. Start with a small amount of alcohol other than at Christmas while you're at home, to check its effects on you. Best not to drive after. If you keep off alcohol most of the time otherwise, that is great for your heart. But don't deny yourself altogether!

I’m curious to know who told you not to combine biso and alcohol? Obviously as hearties we should limit our consumption, but only a few people are told to become teetotal xx

Nobody told me I couldn't have it. I just choose not to but do miss the odd christmas tipple.

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant you couldn't drink because of the Biso x

Guiness Zero if not consuming alcohol. There are loads of alcohol free beer, and also gin, besides rum as well.

Im on 7.5mg of bisoprolol. I do enjoy the odd weekend gin but learnt the hard way to only have a couple of weak ones as when i overdone it i woke up the next morning with what i would describe as the worst case of vertigo that lasted most of the day. On further reading alcohol can increase the effects of bisoprolol so my bp was in my boots.

I’ve been on Bisoprolol for around two years. When I had been on it a while, I explained to my GP that my better half and I used to enjoy a bottle of wine between us on a Friday evening and, since I’d been diagnosed with HF and AFib I’d been uncertain about restarting that. The GP’s reply was “Two glasses of wine a week smacks of moderation to me. By all means return to a couple of glasses of wine a week!” When friends ask me about it, I explain that ‘it’s actually doctor’s orders.’ Almost as good as a prescription!

If not better than a prescription

After I had 2 stents put in after a heart attack I was told that if I had drunk more alcohol I may not have had the heart attck! at that time, (about 12 years ago I probably only had 1 or 2 units a month, and was asked about 5 times between when the paramedic arrived , by the ambulance crew at and at hospital - it was only when I added that my local pub would put the kettle on for my mug of tea if they saw my van dive past, that they actually believed that I drank so little and suggested that I should consume more to thin my blood.😊

I am on Bisopropol and Isodur 25, I find that if I overdo it when walking or I am stressed, I take a nip of Brandy, works for me as it almost immediately calms everything down! I have low blood pressure anyway, so it works for me.

I’m on 3.75 a day & I like a glass of red wine these days, so I have one. As long it’s in moderation is my way of thinking 😬
