Hi all I am on Warfarin and am wondering if anyone who is also on warfarin for there mechanical Aortic valve has had a tooth extraction and how things went. I have been advised by my cardiology doctor to have Antibiotics for a week before. Your information and experience would be a great help

Your cardiologist is right about antibiotics, but the timing is one dose of 3 grams one hour before.

We included all the necessary details in our "Aortic Dissection - The Patient Guide", as many of us (including me) have new aortic valves. See the link to the pdf version in my biog, and find the section on dental work. The original source links are also given under the Resources section at the back.

Normally it will be the dentist who gives you the prescription.

Also should be taken before dental hygienist cleans, and fillings etc, but not necessary for only an inspection.

From T666's post, I've realised an extraction may be a bigger issue than what I was talking about. Check with the dentist.

my dentist insisted on a blood test and a certain reading before an extraction. Despite that I still had problems

For me bleeding gum was an issue for 3 days

Dentist did say if it’s an issue A&E can give an injection that will help it to stop bleeding

Dentist has now said that any future extractions will have to be carried out at the hospital

.. apart from that everything fine. I would say this is only my experience I have spoken with others who had no issues at all

Yeah, they can give you a vitamin K injection to counteract the warfarin.

After the bleeding stops, they might also give you a heparin injection to re-start your anticoagulation as the warfarin takes a couple of days to build up.
