4 months ago I had OHS for a successful mytral valve repair. Everything was super, I'm now only taking 75mg junior aspirin for one year. But, I seem to have developed tinnitus. Research suggests it could be related to the aspirin. Any ideas? Experiences or suggestions?

Hi Dimelza66, I've never heard of tinnitus being caused by medication. There is a tinnitus forum on here you might find helpful. I joined a couple of months ago, but I found it quite a difficult forum to be in because when I talked about my tinnitus it seemed to get really bad when normally I don't think about it and doesn't really bother me. Needless to say I'm no longer on that forum. Wishing you well. Take care
well this has been said. Many medications are said to be “ototoxic”. . Head over to the tinnitus forum part of Health Unlocked.
When you put something in your body, whether it’s medication, glass of water, ice cream, Mars bar or aspirin, it’s going to have some effect or other.
Many people with tinnitus blame something that’s changed in their environment. But for some, tinnitus just arrives. And it might go. Or it might not.
The best resource for information is Tinnitus UK, the charity.
I've had tinnitus for many years and the best advice I ever saw, in a video by an ENT specialist who'd had it and gotten rid of it himself, was basically to ignore it, on the hypothesis that it's due to, or at least worsened by, hypervigilance. So that's what I do, and it hasn't gone, but it doesn't bother me anymore.
I agree. I have it but I hadn't even noticed it for several months -- until I read this post and became aware of it.
I totally agree with the "ignore it" approach. Mine started after my bypass op. I don't think it is down to medication as it wasn't significantly altered after the op, just the doses were lowered which if anything would have reduced the risk of having tinnitus, not increased it.
My tinnitus manifests itself in three different ways - a low pitch hum, a mid range sound which is a bit like water running through central heating pipes and a high pitched whistle. The mix varies, but as to what switches what on, I've still not come to a conclusion after 6 years. I know stress plays a role, so keeping "chilled" is paramount and ignoring it is part of that process.
By the way, I have a friend that has tinnitus caused by the overdose of a certain medication as part of his cancer treatment. He is now in remission, but the effect of the one-time overdose remains. 😯
Hi. Yes, tinnitus is common and mostly dealt with by having 'white noise' in background, ignoring it, things like relaxation-type therapy BUT yes, aspirin can (not often, but it can) affect your hearing or cause tinnitus or trouble with balance, etc. The most important thing to do is have your hearing checked by a qualified audiologist. They will be able to reassure or refer on as required.
Thanks everyone, really appreciate your comments. Have a great day "ringing" or "no ringing"
I get tinnitus after taking Paracetamol . Still don’t know why
