Been a good day for him so far. He said he had a rough night coughing. He was in his chair dressed when I got there. Physio told him off and said you don't need the hoist now, use the pulley to get up and in the chair.Physio and speech therapist came to put tiny camera up his nose to look down his throat to see how thick the secretions were, then they lowered the cuff and after an initial bout of coughing he calmed down and it was down for just over 10 minutes. They had him swallowing as well as coughing. They're going to do it every 2 hours today and tomorrow, then lower the cuff gradually over a few hours, today it's being fully lowered. If they can lower it gradually and leave it lowered he'll get used to it and won't need it. He's also back off the ventilator and on to the oxygen machine again. Only concern I have is he's finished antibiotics last night and coughed all night so hope his infection isn't still lurking.
He sent me out while they did the camera and cuff as he didn't want me to see and worry, but they are thrilled with him. I'll be ringing later to see how he got on with the other tries this afternoon. He went for a nap when I left so he'll be strong enough for the other tries.
When I got back home I stayed on the bus into town and picked up my prescription and did a bit of shopping, so on my day off tomorrow I don't have to go out 😊x
Had the cuff down another twice for almost 15 minutes each time, had him coughing and swallowing again, and he's done really well and they're very pleased with him x
What a difference a day makes I'm so pleased for you and glad you are taking a day of rest tomorrow you need to keep your strength up for when he comes home xx
It’s not uncommon for a cough to linger post a chest infection, or a bad flu or cold so try not to let it get you too down. You have probably heard about the “100 day cough” that’s been making the headlines. I don’t believe it’s contagious or harmful, but it just lingers for a while after being sick. Hopefully, if he needs another course of antibiotics, they’ll be able to give him some.
It’s good to hear he was in happy spirits today. I hope you enjoyed a little retail therapy today and have the chance to wind down tomorrow.
Excellent news - and well done him! I think it's like learning to ride a bike with out your stabilisers - you can do it but just need the confidence So glad the physios and SALT are working together with his breathing. Just wait until the occupational therapists get involved as well - he will want to come home just for the rest Have a good day off tomorrow and a bit of "you time".
I said he would come back up again and he has and I just love reading these positive posts as we are all willing him to make progress on here he has a lot of support and so do you
The antibiotics if he has just finished them will still be in his system and working a few days after you have finished the course he may have just had a little tickle which always is worse at night
So glad you had time to get the things done you needed to so tomorrow you can stay in relax and make it all about you on your day of you certainly deserve it
Thank you so much for this uplifting post and keeping us up to date so many of us I think look out for them x
That’s so good that they are pleased with him and must make you feel much better. Hope the infection has cleared for him as antibiotics, although needed, don’t make you feel great. He is going in the right direction every day so is improving every day and he is getting stronger and stronger. Give him a hug from all of us for being so brave.
Great update, you are so obviously pleased with his progress today and the relief in your post is noticeable. Try to take advantage of your day off, he's in good hands, even if the physios are bullies! After I had OHS I said to the physio " you're not going to bully me, are you?" to which she replied "yes, that's my job".
Sleep well tonight knowing hubby's made good progress again today. 😊 xx
Brilliant news , he could just have a cough because his throat is so dry and still being aggravated by the effect of tubes and things rather than because he still has an infection.Coughing is a good thing as it shows that anything is being removed from settling on the chest and lungs.
He's doing so well , hope you are getting some rest , Bee
What lovely news! Well done to him and the team but particularly you for helping him mentally. You’ve made him realise,in a way he may not have done previously, the power of mutual love. Your posts are eagerly awaited by all of us.
I think you can tell by the number of replies you get to each post that we are all following his progress. Take some time to rest yourself. We are all thinking about you both.
I think after having been so poorly, smaller steps are better. His body is doing what it's capable of doing at the moment but hes improving and thats what's important. Make sure you have a relax and don't do too much on your day off.....you've been through the mill too albeit in a different way. Here's to more of the positive updates. Take care xx
Good morning. Its so good to hear he is back doing well again and let's hope it continues now. Well done for doing a bit of shopping so you can have a relaxing day today. Brian
This is all good news. So pleased for you both. Hopefully you can relax a bit and have some quality time for yourself. Hope your husband continues to go from strength to strength.
That's brilliant news. When that b*****y infection finally gives up, he'll be so much better. Those improvements in the past week have been brilliant.
Make sure you look after yourself and enjoy a bit of retail therapy - goodness knows you deserve it. Keep us posted and when you see hubby next, give him some gentle hugs from us all!
Yes!!!so happy for you both..being rid of the venti is a big help ...from others who have had this and talks with the Doctors they say the venti also causes infections....he is a very strong man...like his wife is a strong lady....just keep this momentum going...and hope it will turn out fine...have a good night.
