Hello, I was taking the diuretic Spironolactone however it caused hearing loss. I explained to my doctor who changed my medication to Furosemide but results are the same. anyone aware of an alternative diuretic that does not effect hearing?

Diuretic side effect
I don't know of an alternative diuretic, but this happened to my dad on furosemide, he already had hearing loss, but furosemide made it a lot worse, once he came off it his hearing loss went back to normal......not everyone knows about this, the audiologist had no idea!
I can’t see this on the side effects myself but I’m not a professional. The person who IS a professional is the pharmacist attached to your doctor’s group of surgeries. If you contact your surgery receptionist she should be able to make an appointment for you to consult him/her.
I suppose the first question is do you need a diuretic? Have you tried a CCB or an ARB which are more conventionally prescribed? If you do need a diuretic, again I think a Thiazide one would be more usual. Having said that I take Spironolactone and it works very well for me with no particular side effects. I am 74 this year and have hearing loss but I had hearing loss before I started to take it. It is a potassium sparing diuretic whereas Furosemide is a loop diuretic. I would be very cautious about taking it because it works so quickly and powerfully. After a dose of Furosemide (Lasix) many people urinate frequently for 6 hours (hence the name Lasix - lasts 6 hours). You might need to be near a toilet for those 6 hours.
I take Bumetanide
Hi I take spironolactone, and in the pass furosemide, but my cardiologist changed me to Bumetanide because furosemide stopped reducing fluid build up in me. I didn’t have hearing problems with any of them. But Bumetanide is another diuretic. You will have to discuss the change with your doctor/cardiologist. Bumetanide is stronger I believe than furosemide.
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I'm seeing a cardiologist on Wednesday and I will discuss a change and suggest Bumetanide. Cheers
I am on both furosemide and spirolactone and have been for some time. No effect on my hearing which is very sharp and I am in my mid seventies. Not sure why I am on both but I find one sees different cardiologists and each has their own idea and they rarely take you off any existing medication. I am currently on ten different drugs…
hi, my Mum is on spironolactone, a light dose, thank God, thanks for this, i'll let her know it could affect hearing,
it is causing my Mum cognition problems.
it has reduced swelling in legs, but caused some itch and rash and the confusion.
please say this is not lasting.
previously had a dose of furosemide and had severe itch,
so only had one dose,
plus i read that furosemide is bad for bone health, so, couldn't have it.
wondering if a thiazide would suit, not that i know what they are.
i'm told that spironolactone action is gentler than furosemide. spironolactone also has an effect on hormones, so that doesn't really sound gentle ..!
