Hubby having cabg X4 on Thursday

Hubby had a very mild heart attack 2 weeks ago. Kept in hospital then after a week sent to a specialist hospital in Sheffield to have angioplasty and stents. They immediately kept him in Sheffield hospital and he's having a quadruple bypass this Thursday. Feeling so scared and although they are fantastic at explaining everything think it's normal to be apprehensive. We've been okay while I'm visiting, but yesterday we both had a cry together. Just posting for support and reassurance I think. Others who had the op are back on his ward after 3 days and are doing great. I just come home to an empty house and think about it constantly

Hello :-)

I imagine it might be the same Hospital I had my triple Bypass done which was Northern General ?

I had a female Italian Surgeon who was the most loveliest person ever even though I think all the surgeons were

They look after you so well and know exactly what they are doing

I had 3 heart attacks my Hospital kept telling me everything was ok Northern General got my results and straight away said she needs a triple Bypass and they were right I would trust them any day rather than my own Hospital

The Nurses are fantastic to he is going to be just fine :-)

I know how difficult it is for you and coming home to a empty house try and get as many friends and family around you and try not to worry about your Husband he is in the best hands ever and will soon be home :-)

Let us know how he gets on :-) x

Yes Northern General, they are all fantastic. Better than the hospital he was in to start with, he was there 4 days before he even saw a consultant or cardiologist. Bit of a trek for me, we have no transport, so visiting 3 days a week and taxis both ways, which costs £100 a day, but well worth it to me. I'll keep you posted, thanks

Hello :-)

I wonder where he was before sounds similar to the Hospital I was originally in and would have cost ny Husband aprox £100 a day in taxis to visit

But he is in safe hands as I have said they know what they are doing and from the Rehab Nurse to the Nurses to the Doctors and Surgeons they are all experts and I would feel reassured that is where he now is waiting to have it done :-)

Look forward to hearing how he gets on :-) x

That's the one. We live in the county town a few miles away which is why taxi fare is so high

Hello :-)

Well when my Husband used a taxi which is nearly 3 years ago now it was between 40 to 45 from here and of course I imagine the prices have gone up now

So not far from us then and honestly it is such a good Hospital know one I came across was anything but professional and kind and I could sense they knew exactly what they were doing

I am a nervous nature and have anxiety but they really put me at ease he will be just fine

You need to make plans for when he comes home which will not be long keep occupied anything you want to know just ask us and we will try and answer :-) x

Thank you. It's £45 from our town to hospital and £52.50 coming back as they use the Sheffield drivers coming back. I'm deep cleaning on days I'm not visiting and getting extra pillows in case he has trouble lying down. They're measuring him for a sort of corset to wear after as he is large build and it's to keep the sternum together while it heals. He's 65 so hoping it gives us at least another 20 years together. I'm older than him at 70, so the travelling is quite tiring. He's practicing already getting out of chairs without using his arms, and on and off the bed. We'll have to ask about showering when he gets home as ours is over the bath and I'm not sure he can get in and out of the bath without pulling up

Hello :-)

Yes was the same here a little cheaper going and Sheffield taxis coming back were that bit more expensive

Some get those v round pillows and find them helpful I never bothered I found I was ok but a lot do recommend them

Seems like he is going to be at an advantage I went in the day before and it was done and had to learn after how to do all these things so that is good they are showing him now :-)

When you are next visiting the Nurses are so helpful or we found they were you could ask about the shower

What I had to do though as ours is over the bath is get one of those chairs you can put in tha bath and sit on them while my Husband helped me shower I was to wobbly to stand for long but after a few weeks we did not need it but I am still glad we bought it because for those first few weeks it was worth every penny even though we just got a basic one

You will get many more years together when he has had this done so make some nice plans what you are going to do with them :-)

I can imagine how much this is taking out of you especially as we get older so you need to rest and look after yourself for when he comes home because you will need your energy then to look after him :-) x

Hi Castleview

Partner of CABG x3 patient here 😊

My partner had his surgery in 2020.

I was amazed how quickly he was up after his surgery - came out of theatre approx 3pm, breathing tube taken out approx 5pm and by 9am the following day he was sat in a chair eating toast! They had him walking a few steps too (with lots of support.)

Please look after yourself too, especially with such a long round trip to visit - is there anyway you could stay nearby to save on the travel (might even be cheaper!) I was lucky as the hospital had a “hotel” just for heart surgery families. Maybe worth asking the hospital if they have anything similar.

My partner had a heart “jacket” too, initially he hated it, but I think it certainly helped him feel protected.

If you have any specific questions please ask (you are welcome to pop me a message if you’d prefer.)

Hope it all goes really well.

Thank you so much, very reassuring. I've thought about a Travelodge or similar for the last couple of days before he comes home, so I'm there to get a taxi for hometime. Others on ward have been told they're going home in the morning but by the time they get meds and signed off it's usually evening, lol, so can't book a taxi until walking out. I'll let you know how it goes on Friday.😊

If you are planning to be at the hospital on the day of surgery (I wanted to be there before, during and after but appreciate some wouldn’t want to be hanging around all that time) then definitely consider a hotel that night - as I was exhausted at the end of the day from all the stress and worry. I really wouldn’t have wanted to face a long journey home that night.

We had the same thing on discharge - were told at 09.30 could go home, actually left at 15.00 ish! To be fair it worked well for us as the person giving us a lift lived a fair way away.

I’ll look out for your update 😊 x

Have just seen this - it must have come as a great surprise to you both from mild HA to major surgery in 2 weeks. I see from your other post he has had it done now. At least there was no waiting on the lists for an op. :)

Hi. I've just seen your post and wanted to add my support to everybody else's. I found this group so kind and caring when my husband had his heart attack. It's very scary and it really helps to talk to people who understand that fear. Take care x
