Post CABG - when did you have follow up appointment?

Just wondering about others experiences... fiancé had his CABG x 3 just under 5 weeks ago and has just received his first post op follow up cardiologist appointment for a check up on surgery and his atrial fibrillation which he is currently on medication for, the appointments not until the end of May (pretty much 4 months after surgery.)

He hasn’t seen anyone since leaving hospital 4 weeks ago, so doesn’t this seem like a long time until he has a check up?

Just wondering if others have waited 16 weeks for appointment for check up after surgery, as we were told 6-8 weeks until check up whilst in hospital....

Hi Chickenlou. I hope your fiancé is well, how is he finding his recovery going?

Not sure what is the norm for follow-up appointments but having had my double bypass on the 5th Feb I have an appointment to see the rehab clinic 6 weeks post-op and my follow-up with the cardiologist 8 weeks post-op. My GP has also been seeing me on a weekly basis. Maybe it might be worth your fiancé going to see his GP for a check up?

Thank you, he’s doing ok 😀 tho is struggling with sleeping and walking a bit (walking due to appalling weather and the cuts on both legs) he’s also finding the mental side tough.

How are you recovering?

We thought we’d been told 6-8 weeks for post op check up so your experience seems to match that - I’ll give them a ring Monday!

I'm good thanks, slowly on the mend. Am also struggling with sleeping though and have a lot of shoulder pain which is uncomfortable.

Hope you get somewhere calling them on Monday.

I would give the cardiology department a ring. It’s normally six weeks after the op for a check up. After both my ops my check up appointment was made before I left hospital, so could be a slip up by the hospital.

Thank you, I will give the hospital a ring on Monday (just wanted to check first I hadn’t got it all wrong in regards to timeframe!)

My own experience was that the surgical team saw me 4 weeks post discharge and then a follow up with the cardiologist was at about 4 months. If you are going from surgery to the first appointment being 4 months hence, if it were me, I’d be a bit concerned. Just on that point, I got my cardiologist appointment letter through before I got my surgical follow up letter.

After my cabg x 5 I had my appointment exactly 6 weeks later.Discharged there and then.2 weeks later started rehab. After 3 weeks of rehab discharged. Now just see my GP once a year for bloods.Good luck and good health.x
