Lansoprazole possible side effects

Hi.

I have been taking lansoprazole for 4 weeks alomg with my other meds, bisoprolol, presugrel, aapirin and atorvastatin, but just this past 4 days ive developed watery diarrhoea which seems to be worse in the evenings and night.

I dont feel unwell otherwise but i get quite bad pain in the area below my belly button just before i need to rush off to the loo.

Could the lansoprazole be irritating my bowel?

Diarrhoea is stated to be one side effect of Lansoprazole, and also stomach pain. I also take Lansoprazole and occasionally have loose stools but only for a day or perhaps two. If it persists I suggest you talk to your GP. If you are being prescribed Lansoprazole to 'settle the stomach' due to the other drugs you are taking (rather than for reflux disease as in my case) you could trial not taking it, with your GPs agreement, to see if you are better off without it.

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

I was prescribed lansoprazole before when i was taking naproxen but i didnt need it as i tolerated naproxen just fine but i cant remember if i stopped using it because it upset my insides or i just didnt take it in the first place

I think i will trial not taking it but will call NHS 111 first.

Thanks

If you don't want to first talk to your GP, you would be better off talking to your dispensing pharmacist,. NHS111 are useless in my experience.

My GP was very keen that I take Lansoprazole after my heart surgeon prescribed only Clopidogrel after my TAVI in July; he said that it wasn't necessary. Even since the op, I'd had uncomfortable bloating and constipation (contrasting with "looseness" before the op). So I started taking Lansoprazole and very quickly noticed an improvement. My bowel movements are now almost normal (I declined my GP's offer of a laxative), but I've found that if I "want to go" it's not a good idea to delay ...

The accompanying leaflet advises that one should see one's doctor if "you get long-lasting diarrhoea and keep being sick. This can happen because Lansoprazole lowers the natural acid in your stomach which would normally help clear the bacteria there."

Lansoprazole gave me terrible diarrhoea. After a review with our practice pharmacist I was swapped to famotidine and have been much better since
