I am fast approaching my first anniversary of my HA and angioplasty. My repeat prescription shows I will stop taking the ticagrelor and lansoprazole. At a review earlier in the year my GP said he would recommend that I stay on the lansoprazole long term to protect my stomach. I would like to know your opinion on this please. I have looked online about the long term effects and am not really sure if I want to continue with it. Thanks in advance for your comments x

I don't think that is strictly true. Since 2009 Lanzoprozole was only indicated with Aspirin if a person couldn't tolerate taking the aspirin alone or had a high risk of gastro-intestinal bleeding. I would ask the GP to explain the need to 'protect your stomach' and ensure that they are checking your B12 and magnesium levels (low levels of either will make you unwell and feel tired)
Personally I would continue to take them, I used to take them and then stopped due to reading about long term effects. Then a few years ago I started with a dry cough and lots of phlegm which got worse, I was full of acid. I had a endoscopy and it was discovered that I had ulcers and barrettes oesophagus. I would advise anyone to think carefully before stopping and obviously listen to their doctors advice.
Be aware that if you stop them suddenly you can get rebound symptoms so it’s better to wean them.
As to whether you need to continue taking them that’s a decision between you and your Dr. I take a daily aspirin and don’t need Lansoprazole or similar. From my perspective I take enough medication so it’s important to me that I am only prescribed those that I actually need. No medication is benign, we should always weigh up the risks V the benefits. I think we understand more now about the long term side effects of taking Lansoprazole etc.
It was in response to the comment re aspirin and the need to take something to protect your stomach. I take my daily aspirin with food ( usually plain, live yogurt and fruit ) and don’t have any problems with reflux or excess acid.
Lansoprazole works by inhibiting the production of acid in the stomach. Whilst I understand that acid can cause problems for some it’s also needed to break down food, help absorption etc.
Hi, I have been on Lansoprazole for along time well over 15 years plus. This was prescribed for acid reflux and Hiatus Hernia along with self help treatment. Not lying flat and not eating or drinking several hours before bedtime. My Specialist has changed the prescription several times to Nexium etc but I find Lansoprazole works best. Hope this reassures you but as everyone is unique maybe best to discuss with your Doctor your concerns etc.
I can only speak personally, but I've been on Lazoprazole for 17 years after anaemia severe enough to warrent a blood transfusion thought to be due to stomach bleeds from Clopidogrel/asprin. At the same time it was also discovered that I also have a hiatus hernia. I have no detectable problems from the drug.
