I recently read on the forum about Bisoprolol fumerate preventing weight loss. Are there any stats that show this? I have been on 2.5mgs since 2017, alongside 60mgs Edoxaban for the episode of AF I experienced then, and my weight has steadily but gradually increased, in spite of several attempts at different diets. I take 30mgs Lisinopril too as the Aromatose Inhibitor I take (to prevent recurrance of the breast cancer I had in 2021) caused my BP to increase as well as my weight! I know if I can lose the weight My meds can be adjusted, and at the moment, I feel as though the weight is the problem but no-one at the surgery or hospital seem to be the slightest bit interested, just add an extra drug to counteract the side effects of others!! Any insight would be welcome!
yes I’ve put on weight on bisoprol started on 1.25 in2019 now want me to have 10 mg tried it but felt so awful also put me on 1.25 dijoxin at same time so which one is causing me to feel so ill u don’t know but I’ve decided just to take 5 mg bisoprol. I’ve no appetite and can’t sleep.
do you think it’s the bisoprolol specifically that’s causing your lack of appetite? I’ve been on it since May/June 2023. I started on 1.25 and am now on 2.5mg with plans to increase to 10mg (it makes me dizzy so we’re increasing slowly).
I’ve completely lost my appetite and I increased around three weeks ago. I can’t imagine this with an extra 7.5mg on top. I’ll never want to eat.
I think it’s the bisoprol that has caused my weight gain and feeling bloated , that was the start of it, but they made me tired and feeling odd, and wobbly so lack of energy and no exercise . I’ve felt worse since they’ve massively increased my dose to 10 mg tried it but dropped to 5 mg they gave them to me to reduce my resting heart rate along with dijoxin but as yet they haven't made any difference . doctor weighed me last week said I had gained half stone since last weigh in but can’t remember how long ago that was, but I’m not very active so that obviously contributes.
I’ve taken 10mg daily and have managed not to gain weight. Best to discuss with GP. You’d need to establish it was definitely the Bisoprolol and not something else .
I’ve taken them for about a year. I don’t know if there is any difference as between male and female. If you are able to increase the amount of exercise you do and make adjustments to diet, you might find that would resolve the problem.
Bisoprolol I felt awful while taking it could not lose weight no matter what diet I tried. Soon as I came off could not believe how well I felt and luckily I had a great practitioner who helped me lose weightHope you get yours sorted
Cardiologist wanted me on amlodipine. But my gp took my blood pressure twice daily for a week. Then he said no I'm not putting you on it as it was round the 120/60 Mark . And iv been so much better
Thanks for your reply I’m going to wait and see my cardiologist my pressure was always same as yours it just that I get AF then every thing goes haywire my resting HR was about 60 now it goes about 100 now just 79 but just sitting here it changes every second just erratic but since I’ve been on higher bisoprol and dijoxin it’s getting worse and I feel bad it’s 84 now 😩
Hi Needlewoman. I did put on a few pounds on bisoprolol very quickly but not enough to worry about. I stopped taking it as my gp agreed the side effects were bad for me but I haven’t lost the extra weight but I think that’s because I’m more sedentary at present. I took Letrozole for nearly 10 years and did put on a lot of weight with that but once I found a brand that agreed with me, I did lose the weight. Could it be your aromatase that’s caused weight gain? It’s always a pain when meds cause us weight gain. Try not to worry too much as your health is more important than weight x
Thanks! Well, yes and no re the weight gain! My health is being compromised by the extra weight! The treatment is just add a another tablet to counteract the side effects- but that is not the answer!
I asked this very question of my cardiologist and then researched it as I wanted an excuse for my weight gain.
Apparently it has been scientifically shown that the medication will have an impact on your weight of one or two pounds but that effect is limited to that initial gain. Thereafter it makes no difference.
So basically if you can get back those couple of pounds you are then back on a even playing field which then will highlight a possible lack of exercise, a change of diet and the reality that we tend to put on weight as we get older
I have been on bisoprolol since July, but since then I jave lost 1 1/2 stone in weight which is great for me but it's the only time in my life I haven't had to try hard to diet
HiYes I have found my weight has increased since I started on Bisoprolol started it in April 23 and Now Nov 23 and have gained 8 pounds over this period, I try not to over eat and walk my dog regularly but it's creeping on.
Only on low dose seeing Cardiology shortly will ask about weight gain.
Hi all just like to say Iv been on bisabrol 5 ml twice a day last 5 years to embarrasst to say how much weight Iv put on but I think it’s just me I like food can’t blame the medication good luck all kwagmire
Good morning, after a HA in December 2021 I was put on 2.5 of bisoprolol and 4 other drugs, after trying different diets I could never lose weight but 5 months ago I decided to try and drastically reduce my carb intake. My starting weight was 12st 9lbs and this morning I'm 10st 13lbs, it's been such a boring time food wise I'm wondering if it's worth it and I reckon I'm going to get myself down to Simmons and buy a Belgium bun that's the size of a dustbin lid😂. In closing I'd like to say that I've come to the conclusion that for me personally weight isn't the be all and end all it's about enjoying life as much as possible. God bless you on your journey
I was on 5mg and it’s not so much the gain as the not being able to loose weight i felt heavy and bloated as well as having wobbly turns and optical migraine everyday -
I stopped it my BP was much more under control and the weight gain upset me far more and now I feel yards better without it and all the side effects have stopped ! But that’s me chat to your Gp I did snd they were supportive.
Fir every ill there’s a pill and for every pill there’s an ill !
I can only speak from my experience, I’ve been on 1.25mg bisoprolol for a year and have been slowly losing weight.
There’s definitely experts out there that can help, it would be great to talk to your GP or a health coach. They could review your meds and help you with a weight loss plan.
To be honest I’ve never heard of any successful diets really, my only tip is to move a little more and eat a little less (easier said than done sometimes)
I was on bisoprolol for 2 years, 10mg daily at the maximum before my ablation, and during that time I lost 5 stone. The bisoprolol made me very tired and it was difficult to do anything, but the main thing that aids weight loss is how much you eat. Exercise is great for making you feel better but on the whole it doesn't burn many calories. My diet was mainly proper food, low fat, low carb, lots of fruit and vegetables with very occasional treats when I reached certain milestones. It's not easy but it can be done.
Yes it was a little hard to keep my optimal weight when I was on 3.75 mg Bisoprolol. When I came off it I had a welcome side effect - my cholesterol dropped by a point. It was still down six months after so I feel it was stopping Bisoprolol that was the welcome cause.
I hope you find the "culprit" but as you are on other medication only a doctor can help you find out for sure.
I have been on 2.5mg since end of July following a HA. I have cut all rubbish out of my diet literally, no alcohol or anything nice. I have lost weigh albeit very slowly at a pound a week. I would have expected it to come of much quicker in the early days although experts would say a pound a week is good, I def think the medication is affecting it as it slows your body down.
That's interesting. I am trying to shift the last stubborn stone BUT I acknowledge that I have been comfort eating the wrong things in the evening and wine gums, choc etc.
I'll have a really good go and see if it shifts.
If not will talk to my female GP about it.
Thank you very much by bringing this to my attention through this Forum.
Hi, I have been prescribed 1.25mg Bisoprolol along with aspirin and rosuvastatin, for the past eight months, and with changing my diet, I have been slowly losing weight. (66kg down to 60kg). I had been the same weight for many years before now. For me, it must have been the cheese and butter! 😊
Hi I’m taking 10mg bisoprolol each day because of afib. I found it difficult losing weight because of fluid retention but since my heart failure tablets include dapagliflozin I began to lose weight.
I don’t have an appetite because I can’t taste anything and haven’t done in the 5 years since I began my heart failure cocktail of meds, and that was before I even had bisoprolol. I used to be very tired in the afternoons and would suddenly wake up wondering when I fell asleep feeling like I suddenly blacked out. My daughter said to me once, one minute we’re talking the next your snoring.
I also take gabapentin for nerve damage after a nasty fall. Once I cut that down from 3 a day to 2 I found the fog as lifted a lot and I’m losing even more weight.
It’s very hard to tell which med is doing what until you stop one. I use to take one and I discovered it was giving me terrible unbearable cramps in my foot and hands once it stopped that’s when I realised.
Thanks everyone for the comments-all very enlightening! I have no appetite, I eat 2 small meals a day, usually between 10am and 6pm, not later, eat green veggies every day, very little bread, no alcohol, no sweetened soft drinks, very boring, I used to have a sweet tooth, but that's gone, and I run a B&B-only three rooms, but bed making and cleaning keep me busy. I do sit down in the evening, but I've usually been going all day! I have a wardrobe of clothes I can't get into, so my self-esteem is on the floor!
I'm speaking to the GP on Monday. I was prescribed Amlodipine to help the BP, (I had adverse effect in the past). That caused an AF episode after taking it two mornings, and I ended up in A&E instead of going out to dinner! I'm now back to square one!!
Hi, I'm on Bisoprolol and the dose has steadily increased to 6.25mg and my weight has steadily increased since I started taking it, and all my other heart and BP meds.
I don't know if Bisoprolol is the cause but there is correlation between my weight gain and my starting to take Bisoprolol.
Hi needlewoman, I too am on Bisoporol and Edoxaban and Lisinopril. I have A/Fib and two leaky heart valves and suffered from Oedema and I take Bumetanide to control it . Have you asked your GP ,if you might have fluid retention? I lost two and a half stone, since being prescribed the water tablets.
|I do take 25mg Spironolactone each day, so I don't think so, the weight is all around my torso-arms ok, legs heavier to carry the extra weight-about 9kgs! I took HRT for 30+ years, and didn't want my boobs to bloom by hitting the menopause! 🙄 now, I take a 12 on the bottom and 14 on the top! Never before! I'm 5'2" and small ones, so I do notice the difference in energy-or lack of it!
Hi, I was on 2.5mg of bisoprolol to treat lvh but it was stopped after 12 months(April last year) due to constantly feeling lightheaded with dizzy spells and a heart rate of 30. I did gain some weight during that time and i have struggled to lose it since but I think it might be down to having bradycardia with low energy levels and being constantly fatigued but being on the bisoprolol didn't help matters too. Bisoprolol for me was used to ease the workload on my heart but as it lowered my hr to 30 my energy levels dropped resulting in less motivation and gaining weight.
Hi I have been in bisoprolol for 2 yr I did put on a lot of weight due to my condition and the tablets I have since had a ICD fitted to help my condition and still never lots have now joined a slimming group for healthy eating and have now lost over 2 stone and I have been taking 7.5 mg of bisoprolol so don’t give up everyone’s is different maybe speak to your doctor 👍🏻 good luck
Been on bisoprolol for 4 years and was already a greedy fatty however after having a scary episode one night I decided to make the effort cutting out everything that made life worth living. Now down to an acceptable weight which gives my wife concerns as she thinks I have shed to much,---- so good luck needlewoman22.
I take bisoprolol , was on 3.75, now 2.5mg. No weight gain , 3kg loss since August , all due to being mindful of what and how much I eat and exercise. Nutrition is key to weight loss, knowing the calorie content of the various foods I eat has helped me tremendously over the last 5 years . Made a significant transformation, still had a heart attack though…
sorry to hear that and glad you are now doing well. I probably do not eat enough! I have no appetite, and only drink tea or water-very boring! No sugar, biscuits(what are they?) etc, plenty of veg, no processed food-I cook each day
You’d be the first person to defy the laws of thermogenesis if you are saying you don’t eat enough and are gaining weight. Eating more will definitely gain more weight. Being proactive about it may be helpful, it might seem a pain in the proverbial to actually find out how many calories you’re currently eating , then make a reduction daily or weekly . I’m glad I educated myself on basal metabolic, non exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT.. just moving more ). Here’s an copy of some info from the web on Bisoprolol and weight gain
It may seem as if the odds were stacked against you when you take these medications. You burn off fewer calories, and you want to exercise even less than before. Even if you ate a healthy amount of food before starting beta blockers, you may find 3 to 5 pounds creeping on every month. With the increased health risks that accompany weight gain, just accepting the problem is not the answer. You’re going to have to get proactive with your weight, no matter how little it mattered before.
Keep a food diary for two weeks, tracking everything you eat and drink. Use this to find your average daily calories.
Cut your average calories by 250 per day. This may be simpler than it sounds, if you look at your average menu. Cutting out sodas alone can accomplish this goal.
Take a walk, play with children, walk the dog, play basketball, or do some sort of movement that adds up to 250 calories each day. Use a site such as CaloriesPerHour to determine what you burn off. Check with your cardiologist to get suggestions for safe exercises for you.
It’s not easy, and it may never be the natural process you used to enjoy, but achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is possible while taking beta blockers. You’ll need to develop new habits, and find new motivation, but weight gain isn’t inevitable.
My guess is that it probably does.?? When I was first prescribed it many years ago I remember the GP telling me that this medication can make you tired and feel lethargic to start with. But I think over time you get some energy back but not as much as iff you weren’t on it.? So less energy/lethargy to me means less exercise.? Which obviously means weight gain unless you cut down on calories.??
I agree I don’t do a lot of formal exercise but as I said I have a B&B so that keeps me fit and busy up and down stairs making beds etc! I have been counting calories as well and I’m having around 800 -900 a day- I also have an under active thyroid which I’m still trying to get sorted out- believe me I’m not sitting on my butt eating ice cream all day! Anyway enough of me- I’m talking to the gp tomorrow again.
