My Afib. is permanent and erratic .Not in a class where(now)I am going to hospital because I misread the signs for a heart attack.Since those distant days, prob. 10 years or so, I have avoided caffeine .I can only say I think my Afib would be much worse if I took caffeine so it is decaff. tea and coffee for me and about twice a week i have a home made caffeine cappuchino.

Thank you for your help , I’m changing to decaf as we speak because I’m convinced that my wild beats are from coffee and possibly eating too fast with a hiatus hernia πŸ‘πŸ‘

I’m a fast eater too unfortunately. I Eat like a competition eater but not the big amounts like they do. I don’t chew things properly.? My food enters my stomach not chewed properly.!! Iv ate like this since been a child and I don’t know why.? I’m not greedy for big amounts at all but anything I eat has 3 chews and it’s swallowed.!!

hi. I drink decaf all of the time (I buy decaf pods for my machine) and I don’t even notice the difference. I was told by a doctor a while ago that even drinking decaf tea 6 hours before bed is a no-no because your brain thinks it’s caffeinated anyway. I also drink decaf tea but get ringtons decaf as it’s the closest taste to normal tea. X

Hi, Hazel1010,

I gave up having coffee for many weeks following my HA in March 2022. This was very difficult as I have used coffee since I was a teenager, but I felt so poorly that I thought that this action was best for me.

I have been back drinking my coffee for several months now. I usually have one cup following breakfast. I make sure that I have food and medicine prior to the caffeine. I then usually have one, possibly 2, extra cups per dayβ€”several hours between each.

I do sometimes notice skipped beats/palpitations after having coffee, but I feel that I have given up a whole lot so far anyway. For example, I still have an unopened bottle of wine in my fridge that someone had gifted me shortly before my HA.

Of course, I may feel at some point that I need to stop all coffee, but I hope that day is not too close. On the positive side, I have heard several people say that they cannot taste any difference with decaf. I hope that you can sort out what is best for you. 😊

Hazel1010 profile image

Hi there. I too gave up caffeine a few years back now. I drink decaff tea. It tastes the same as regular tea. I did get on well with decaff coffee but then it started making me feel sick so gave that up. I just stick with the tea now. Chocolate sets mine off sometimes aswell.

peterjones105 profile image

Caffeine is a cause of my BP and ectopics, I minimise my caffeine intake by a very occasional decaf coffee or hot chocolate, I very rarely drink alcohol for the same reasons. As an aside if you ever take Ibuprofen that can set off an irregular heart beat or even arrhythmia.

Good luck

Decaff coffee is much milder and rarely has the same taste as full strength so you may need to experiment. If you drink ground coffee most are rayed 3 but the Coop have one rated 4.

Hi I was a bit dubious about swapping to decaf tea and coffee but it really has helped the ticker. Much like others here choosing a decent decaf coffee is pretty easy but getting a decent decaf tea is much more difficult. I tried lots and ended up with Twinnings decaf tea. But I see Anon2023 rates Ringtons decaf tea so reckon I’ll give them a whirl and see what they are like. Whilst I’m sure there are downsides to drinking decaf products I’m sure there are as many issues with the fully caffeinated alternatives so unless you want to drink just hot water which a few folk do give decaf a bash it certainly has helped in my case.

I switched to decaf coffee about a year ago after I was told it can cause problems if you drink too much. I was drinking too much of the stuff anyway. I found that I now sleep better and if I have an ordinary coffee now, boy do I know about it. All I can say is give it a try, I use a well known brand which comes with a green label, but it is all down to your personal taste.

I switched to decaf almost as soon as I was disnosed with HOCUM about 12 years ago. It does make a difference. I still have one espresso a day to start my engine but have cut out caffeine for the rest of the day. We went on holiday and had caffitiere coffee and that was 4 days of ectopics. Cheaper coffee tends to have more Robusta than Arabica and hence more caffeine. I’m suspicious that caffeine is boosted in instant coffee to help it sell.

Hope you find something that works for you πŸ˜€.

Hazel, try green tea and I promise you that you won't miss coffee again. I used to drink 2 cups of black coffee everyday for 20 years, I used to get a headache if I did not have one by 11am and I stopped overnight and not because of any major problems, nothing to do with heart issues. I just didn't like the feeling it was giving me anymore, it made me hyper and alert and creative for exactly 30 mins and then a downer. Since I switched to green tea I have felt great, it gives you that gentle caffeine rise and it's gradual, just enough caffeine to not have a headache but not too strong. I have 2 a day and I will never go back to coffee. I just miss the smell of roasted coffee though.

I gave up caffeine 2 years ago after ohs and even decaf gave me the skippity heart beats so I went cold turkey and now drink a black fruit tea with the merest hint of caffeine and that does satisfy my tea desires . I loved a coffee but after half a cup I was in a&e so that did put me off ever so slightly !! so now I just smell my husbands strong black coffee ( ahhhhh) and fondly remember headier days !! I do however drink loads more water at room temperature and that’s had a dramatic affect on my tragic blood pressure so much so that I’ve had one lot of bp pills stopped !! Hello again! Before you completely give up the caffeinated coffee, try and make sure it β€œclean” coffee AND, what you put in it. Don’t know if you have access to organic blends of coffee in the UK, and I suspect you do, this is the type you should buy.

I make my caffeinated coffee with a blend of Ghee, MTC Oil and stevia and put it in a glass blender. It’s a creamy blend and you won’t get the over buzz.

That being said, caffeine generally can overstimulate an already stressed out person and create more PVC’s. There evidence to show however that 1-2 cups of coffee does not generally cause Afib. If I get PVC’s from caffeine, it’s usually later in the day but exercise can mitigate that. You can read his great articles at Drjohnday.com

I do switch back and forth between decafe and caffeinated to kinda keep those annoying PVC’s in check!

Also, if you can get this brand of tea where you are called Teeccino, you’ll never go back to that boring off the shelf stuff again!!!

Happing drinking!

I've only drunk decaff for the last several years. Same with caffeine free coke and Sprite.

Yorkshire decaff tea used to be my go to but actually PG tips decaff doesn't seem to bad now. There's also a better range of 'boutique' decaff teas now.

As for coffee, Nespresso pods are the best decaff ones imo. So many independent companies out there make decaff pods for the machine whereas Tassimo were limited to Kenco and I got fed up.

I have had the illy decaff pods from Tesco and they've been great. Lavazza are also good.

Cafepod ones from Tesco and Amazon are good too. Little bit more bitter though.

Then there are the independent Nespresso ones to try. Blue Goose Coffee, Roar etc.. All have been good. So many independents for Nespresso it's worth shopping around.
