Bisoprolol withdrawal - sleep issues

My husband had bad side effects on bisoprolol but was on it for three years. His consultant told him to gradually stop it which he has done and has now been completely off it for about three weeks. However, he is having real difficulty in sleeping (which believe me is unlike him :) ). Has anyone else experienced this and how long did it last for. He is reluctant to go to the GP and be given yet another tablet to take to help him sleep.

Hi Suebedoo,

Sorry to hear that your husband has been experiencing difficulties sleeping, it’s horrible.

I don’t have any experience with bisoprolol but did have this issue when I stopped taking metoprolol. I think my problem was due to the fact that I had been sleeping for longer at night and having a nap. Then I was waking up earlier and like Hidden has mentioned was feeling ‘ready’ for the day but my energy levels would plummet around 4pm and it was a battle to make it to bedtime. I was often falling asleep at 4pm and then struggling to fall asleep at a normal time!

Hope your husband starts feeling better soon but I would suggest (although I sympathise with his reluctance) to give him a gentle nudge and encourage him to speak to his GP.

Best wishes

Before coming off of them, he could have slept all day everyday and all night. I do recall when he first went on them he didn't sleep well but we put that down to the after effects of his open heart surgery

no - he was so exhausted from lack of sleep yesterday that he tried to have a nap but he couldn’t. At the moment he seems to have one good night’s sleep every four or five days. He can’t nap even if he tries.

Thank you - will gently push him in that direction

Well if he was on it for 3 years I’d still wait a while

I only slept and felt awful no energy to do anything on bisoprlol

hi there hope your husband recovers soon. I took nebivolol & bisporol for 3 years. Weaned off real slow 2-3 months time. Even After 5 months of leaving I still experience fast heart rate occasionally.

The beta blockers withdrawal is very deep routed & every body reacts differently fast heart rate, anxiety, tremors sweating etc. My advise wean off very gradual, get exercise light walk and some benzos ( Benzodiazepines) for taking edge off initially.

The first 3-4 weeks are hard after quitting but it will pass stay strong good luck

hi

I have been taking Bisoprolol for 5 years, along with other tablets following a heart attack. During that time I have struggled with sleep difficulties. Whether as a side effect of the drugs or due to ageing I simply don’t know.

I have more recently suffered from fatigue and brain fog which I suspect may have been as a result of moving to an increased dose of Entresto. The good news is I have felt significantly better in the last few weeks.

It is difficult to attribute general issues to a particular drug.
