I take Warfarin and my Haemoglobin has always been at the top end of the range.

I’ve been on Warfarin since 2009 and never had a problem with blood counts.

thanks Rosie.

Hi, I'm on Warfarin and my Haemoglobin levels have been low for a few years.

This is due to a couple of reasons, the first is straightforward enough as my Mechanical Valves, destroy the Red Blood Cells too early in the life cycle. I take a daily dose of Folic Acid to aid the haemoglobin level, but, I will always have anaemia as a consequence.

The second is more complicated, involving a spiking INR and internal bleeds. My level is currently circa 90 g/L, so I'm closing in on another transfusion.

Not sure this will help.

Thanks for your reply. I’m taking apixaban and my hemaglobin is lower than normal. I’ve been told by a nurse that the tablets could be partly responsible for this. I’m going to be checked to see if I have a stomach ulcer that might be bleeding slowly. All the best.

I am on Apixaban and have to take iron tablets. (Ferrous glycinate 300mg - now reduced to only 3 or 4 times a week). I had too little stomach acid (which is unusual) and therefore did not metabolise the iron. Doctor did not realise and prescribed Omeprazol which gave me horrible anaemia. That was the start of my heart problems. Everyone is different and my experience is unusual. Omeprazol is good for many people - just not me.

Thanks for your reply, I’ve been on omeprazole since my angina/ bypass. I’m being referred for investigation into possible stomach ulcer.

usually stomach ulcers are due to too much stomach acid which is why the omeprazole. As a rough and ready test you can drink bicarb of soda in water first thing in the morning and see how long it takes to burp. Look it up on the web. If it takes ages then stomach acid too low. The more quickly you burp the more acid you have.

Interesting, I've been on blood thinners for 12yrs, I'm always low in iron, had the invasive tests for internal bleeding, all good. Doctor put me on iron tablets, but it remains low. Unfortunately I can't go off blood thinners as within a couple of weeks I have a heart attack. I have a variety of other health problems that could be the cause. Take care. Moni

i am on two thinners Edoxaban and Clopidogrel. Low haemoglobin levels were picked up. It transpired I had slow bleeds in the aorta. Symptoms dark stools with a tendency to constipation and lower stamina and energy level. Solution found after endoscopy. Get it checked out would be my advice.
