Hi folks,
Been having some eye issues recently requiring drops and my optician suggested taking omega supplements aswell. Read that you possibly shouldn’t take them if you’re on blood thinners?
Anyone know if that’s the case?
Much appreciated.

I have also heard this, but I wouldn't take fish oil supplements anyway. The problem is that oftentimes the fish oil is highly processed and may well be oxidised which will do more harm than good. You'll never know if it is oxidised because you swallow it whole in a capsule and even if you chewed it, the processing is likely to have removed any rancid flavour.
Personally I make sure I eat oily fish at least once per week, and I also eat tinned cod livers occasionally. I have multiple eye issues and I do think this has helped alongside regular flax seed consumption and increasing my magnesium levels.
Also, I'm not sure what your particular eye issues might be, but eggs are extremely nutritious and good for eye health. I eat around 20 per week.
Thanks for this and your reply above. Its dry eye, I’ll look into things a bit further, maybe plenty eggs!!
Have you been advised to use a heated eye pack and gentle massage?? I have mild meibomian dysfuntion, the glands near eyelashes don't always work as well as they should( sounds very grand)I use eye pack each morning and also over the counter, moisturising drops. With drops I've found it to be trial and error for each individual, I use hycosan dual with ectoin but it is a bit of suck it and see.
😳 Eggs are ‘extremely nutritious’, but surely consuming this amount week on week is having a detrimental effect on your overall cholesterol and LDL levels? 😱
No. This used to be believed, but it is widely accepted now that dietary cholesterol has little effect on serum cholesterol levels for the vast majority of people.healthline.com/nutrition/di...
I stopped taking them, but some problems with dry eyes came back. I reintroduced, but I don’t take a large dosage capsule. Just a basic Seven Seas one.
It’s dry eyes I have, drops for the foreseeable future it seems. Did you check with your doc if you were okay to take seven seas if on blood thinners? Thanks for your reply.
I usually find that the GP doesn’t really think much about supplements. I did mention to the pharmacist, and also the senior registrar at a recent appointment. Wasn’t warned off them or anything.
I think that sometimes people take supplements in really large doses which could interact far more.
Though it’s just a personal decision after that really, I don’t take a lot of supplements.
I've taken omega 3 for years as I have familial hypercholesterolemia. After my valve surgery I asked the surgeon if it was ok to take it again and he said yes. I take one called Nothing Fishy that I get on subscription it's not made from the fish just from the algae
Good morning ROBBO36. I also had a problem with dry eye. Which is watery eyes and was sold a eye cover heat pads from the opticians because he said my tear ducts were dry and blocked. These eye pads caused me to have floaters in my eyes so I stopped using them and went to hospital and had the tear ducts unblocked. My eyes were still weeping in windy conditions. I then went for an eye test and was told I had Retinal Dystrophy. So now I am on daily eye drops 3 times a day and. Another type of drop for night time. Probably on them for life and got to have eyetest every year now. My friend had her tear ducts replaced and it didn't work for her. Eyes still watering. Brian
Hi, l have dry eyes and have done for several years. You don’t say what anticoagulant you are taking. I take Warfarin. I haven’t taken Omega 3 since l have been on this as l was told not to. I always ask the pharmacist before any over the counter stuff. I have drops for my eyes but l have found nightly eye ointment has helped me the most. You have to find what is best for you. You can buy this yourself, but speak to the pharmacist if you are worried as they will always advise you what is best.
Hi, There are several which you can buy over the counter. Most of them are ok. The one l have is Hycosan night with vitamin A. The ointment protects the surface of the eye. I kept getting blood-shot eyes until l used a nightly ointment. Hope this helps.
Hi there, I’m on 75mg aspirin. I’ll ask the pharmacist / doctor for their advice. Thanks for your reply.
I’m also on 75mg of aspirin daily and have ‘dry eye’; I’ve never been advised to stop taking fish oil supplements. I’m prescribed Celluvisc drops to use as many times daily as necessary (but they can also be bought over the counter). The supplement I buy is Omega Balanced 3, 6, 9 Fish Oil with Flaxseed Oil. 🐟
Hi I m interested in this post as I ve recently been having eye problems, blurry & very dry . My optician thought it might be my medication & my consultant thought it might be digoxin & halved my dose . May I ask what medication you are on?
Many thanks
my husband took omega 3 along with blood thinners. We were told omega 3 thins the blood after he had problems with bleeding. The combination of both was too much, I definitely would not recommend them.
What does the information leaflet with your medicine say?
If it doesn’t say anything then perhaps ask a pharmacist or doctor. It may be that its a case of try it and see how it affects you. My husband is on Warfarin, which can be affected by virtually anything, and takes omega-3 without any issues. He's never been told not to.
Hope you manage to find the info you're seeking.
