Hi guys this isn't heart related I guess, but just hoped I can get some advice. I have just been told I have a bad Diastasis Recti and the doctor says I need surgery. I haven't had any surgery since being put on blood thinners so am a bit concerned. Also not sure how surgery will react with my ICD. Thanks for reading. Take care everyone 😁

Surgery and blood thinners.
Hello
Sorry to hear you need surgery
I personally think you need to make a list of all the meds you take including the Blood thinners and contact your Doctor or the Consultant and ask them as they will know
They usually have a list of our meds and are well aware of what we are taking but for peace of mind tell them your concerns
Good luck and I hope everything goes well x
Thank you so much for your advice BeKind I really appreciate it x
I've had 2 ops since pacemaker and going on anticoagulants, usually the anticoagulants are stopped for a few days before and after, I was off them for 5 and 7 days, no problems.
Hello jowalk6
You have had some great advice from BeKind28 and Bantam12.
The only thing to add. Most patients have a pre op session to check they are fit for surgery. They take your blood pressure, weigh you and do an ECG if needed.
They ask which medication you are taking and ask about your medical history.
Good luck with your surgery.
I am on apaxiban 5mg twice a day ~ had knee replacement recently and just stopped the tablets one day before operation ~ had no issues at all
Hi , I know this is different but I had 4 teeth taken out last Thursday and my dentist told me to stop taking my aspirin, out of all my heart meds , the day before and on the day. He said to start aspirin the following day if no bleeding. All was good.x
This question is for people with experience of taking coagulants and then requiring surgery. we do not need your opinion on "rat poison".
Hi, I had a triple bypass and AVR last October and I have an ICD fitted as well. My blood thinners, Clopidogrol, were stopped a few days before surgery and the ICD was 'turned off' during the procedure. Had no issues before, during and after surgery and the ICD was checked to make sure that it was still operating OK.
Hi jowalk. As others have said, you need to contact those involved in your surgery if possible. Even amongst the medical profession there seems to be a difference in opinion. I had an emergency cholecystectomy last year while on clopidigrel and aspirin. Because of the unplanned nature of it I was just taken off them the night before and then resumed 3 or 4 days later. No problems in my case. With very best wishes for your surgery. X
Thank you for your reply
Just to give a context to your comments.
Do you have a lived experience of a heart disease that means you take either an anticoagulant or antiplalet medication and have then needed surgery?
Definitely recommend you make a list of your medication. I am having a tooth extracted at the end of the month and as I take both Apixiban and Sodium Risedronte I Googled the NICE and NHS websites for information about extractions and these medications. I then copied relevant info. onto a Word Document and went armed to discuss these with my Dentist! However, he informed me that he has - by - Law - to write to my GP and ask for a) permission to remove the tooth or refer me to the local hospital b) when/if I have to stop taking these drugs. So, if the GP's instruction does not meet these guideline I will be wanting to know why. If you decide to Google for information please be careful what Sites you access. The Dentist was OK that I had accessed the NICE and NHS sites commenting that any other could be "dangerous".
