Rosemary and Rob had been married for over 50 years and set in their ways. They muddled along fairly happily but age was now catching up with them. Concerned about Rosemary's hearing, Rob rang the GP surgery. He got a call back three days later whilst he was pottering in the garden shed. He had put in an electric supply years ago so it was quite cosy with a small fan heater electric kettle and a tin of assorted biscuits which did little to help his waistline. The GP agreed to see Rosemary face to face in a couple of weeks time. In the meantime he asked Rob to do a few tests to see what the problem was. He suggested that Rob speak to Rosemary from 40 feet away and see if she heard him. If not he should go 10ft closer each time until she heard him. That afternoon Rob was in the lounge and with the doors open it was 40ft away. He asked Rosemary what was for supper. On getting no reply he went into the hallway and asked the question again. No reply. He walked halfway down the hallway and repeated the question. Again no reply. Standing 10 ft away at the kitchen door still no answer. He then went into the kitchen, stood next to Rosemary and said "What is for supper?" She turned around and said to him "For the fifth time it is Chicken Savoyarde from Elizabeth David's French cookery book. You really should see the doctor as your hearing loss is getting quite irritating!"
