I don’t know if this will help you but here goes. I am on Amlodopine, Bisoprolol , Losartan, Clopidogrel, Rivaroxaban, Atorvastatin and Lansoprazole. I was fine until I had to stop Lansoprazole for two weeks while waiting for a gastroscopy. I then suffered badly from flatulence and was a bit worried about taking Gaviscon because of the high sodium content. Dual action Rennies we’re very helpful. As far as constipation is concerned I was fine when I added prunes to my AllBran. Hope this is of some help.
On another matter, I now have gout and wonder if some of my medicines could be the culprit. I gather that prunes, unfortunately could add to the problem. I will ring my doctor on Monday.
I would avoid co-codamol if at all possible it will definitely cause constipation. You could also ensure you are properly hydrated by drinking at least 2 litres per day.
codeine is the probable trouble maker here. I have the same problem and in several years I haven’t found a solution that works except to stop taking the codeine.
Try glycerine suppositories from Boots when all else fails. I’m trying Inulin for the first time, so far it seems to calm everything. Also a spoonful of Gaviston before bed. I switched from PPIs to Famotidine, Gp didn’t want to as they are much more expensive but Consultant prescribed them. I find dried apricots cooked in my porridge are better than prunes. Good Luck😻
I had a HA end of November. One of my drugs was Lansoprazole.Had chronic diarrhoea. It was awful. A cardi nurse told me to stop taking the Lansoprazole for a week to see if it helped. It cleared up within 2-3 days.
It has now been recommended I go onto Osmeprazole as a alternative.
Having used this drug a few years ago with stomach side effects plus the fact this is also known to cause diarrhea I am not keen to go down his route.
I have to take a high dose PPI for reflux disease and have done so for well over 15 years. I used to take esomeprazole (Nexium) until it was changed post HA to lansoprazole due to the interaction with clopidogrel that I was prescribed at the time. I have suffered no ill effects with either of these. However if you have difficulty tolerating one PPI, as Kristin1812 has said above, there are several PPIs available and it is good idea to run through them until one is found that suits you, so if you have already tried two PPIs and they didn't suit you there are still others available, so I suggest you discuss this with your prescribing physician.
slowed bowel activity and constipation must be a top10 side effect of most health issues and treatment ..... but we are hardly ever warned or prepared for it!
a good intake of fluid and fibre (through fruit and veg mostly) with regular activity are the best way to avoid and resolve these - plenty of advice in other threads and online - but you are already trying that
you can't really change you medications (although there should be alternatives to help with your angina) so your main additional option is something other than lactulose or senna - have you tried something like laxido/macrogol or similar? check with your pharmacist to ensure no medication clashes - you may find you need to take it very regularly for a while to establish a regular pattern
Cocodamol definitely causes constipation, I actually cannot use this tablets.
The statin gives me diahorrea.
Hi, I had a Bypass in September and was totally unprepared for the number of medications 💊 that I would be faced with post Bypass. Three months plus and I'm still struggling with their side effects. Firstly, mild nausea switching Clopidgrel from1st thing to bedtime helped, but it's still a problem. Unlike others, I've been suffering from very loose stools. The GP surgery practice nurse thinks the problem is the 30mg of Lansoprazole I'm taking each morning but looks like I'm stuck as I'm on Clopidgrel and for whatever reason you have to take them in tandem. On reflection, had I been aware of the effects on my sence of well-being and quality of life the recommended medication post Bypass would cause I might have been more prepared. Hope you find a solution. Best regards, Denis

As I and Kristin1812 have noted above there are several PPIs available and if one is causing unpleasant side effects others may not, so you could push for the opportunity to try another. Unless it is unavoidable medication is there to help not make life a misery.
👋 Hi LowerField, I have spoken to my GP re an alternative. Sadly, whilst I'm stuck with Clopidgrel until the 12mth anniversary of my Bypass Lansoprazole would appear to be the best of a bad bunch.
In truth, I am in a far better place than a lot of us, at least I can look forward to a virtual drug free future come September. Regards, Denis

Ah! A drug free existence is the utopian dream to which all of us aspire. If you can attain that you are doing well and indeed have my admiration and blessing. Unfortunately for the likes of myself and others like me it is sadly not possible for a number of reasons. But we shouldn't let that get in the way since, as you say, there is always someone else in a worse predicament.

A drug free future is probably just a pipe dream. 🤷 But the prospect of a reset come September and going back to a daily routine of a baby Asprin + 20mg Amoprozal is what's keeping me sane! 😅
First of all, I’m glad yr dr knows how you’re struggling. It will be a case of trial & error, knowing your body and training it.. You mention lots of fruit, but apparently that’s not cutting it. Add a good portion of green veg every day and multicoloured veg. Also baked potatos regularly and baked beans. And you must have plenty of fluids - a glass of water before you even get out of bed is a good start! Fibogel and similar are helpful also As Well As the good diet. Best wishes.
Adding my experience with Cocodamol. I was given this to dull the pain after a bout of shingles. Also on similar heart meds to you. I immediately developed severe constipation and after a few days gave up the cocodamol which cured the constipation. The pain from the shingles was more durable than dealing with the constipation.
I developed acute diarrhea requiring hospital stay and read up on the medication section of this chatline. I found quite a few who were on Lamoprozole and another (ozole) medication who had suffered with diarrhea. I discussed this with the Cardiologist who changed my stomach protection medication yet again and have had no problems since. Hope you can find a med that suits you soon.
