My 42 year old husband has recently been diagnosed with idiopathic severe heart failure.
He’s been discharged on the usual meds but he’s suffering terribly with stomach pain, more so when he’s eaten. Once gastro gave the all clear the cardiologist said it’s due to congestion cause by his heart. He’s on 40mg furosemide. I’m wondering if anyone has suffered with this and if there’s anything to relieve?
Thank you in advance 🤞🏼

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. After I had my HA I suffered with stomach issues. My Gastroenterologist explained to me that when you have a HA the blood supply to other organs is effected. I did feel at one point so stressed at how I felt and was sure it would never be right again. I'm glad to report I eventually got there. So it might be a difficult time for now but I'm sure you will get there. All the best.🤗
it might be worth having a chat with your dispensing pharmacist to see whether he or she can suggest something to relieve the pain - but this does need a discussion not you just buying something over the counter, in my opinion.
The heart and stomach are very close together in the body and can affect each other due to their closeness and because they are linked by the vagus nerve
But also some types of heart pain are very similar to stomach pain: wind or indigestion can feel like chest pain (often called heartburn) - some people who come to hospital with what feels like chest pain are misdiagnosed with reflux/heartburn etc , and some people think they have indigestion only to find that it is a heart attack
So please report this to a doctor for them to check
I had my acute STEMI seven months ago. Had five stents fitted. A month after the event I started getting terrible stomach pains. I was diagnosed with a Hiatus Hernia over twenty years ago and have had no problems with it whatsoever. However, I went to the doctors and explained everything, as I am in so much constant pain, which gets worse every time I've eaten. He said, it was more than likely the blood thinning medication I was on - particularly the Aspirin - aggravating the Hernia. I cannot stop the blood thinners as it is likely to cause another heart attack. I've now been referred to gastroenterology for another opinion. My Cardiologist has said I can stop the Aspirin after twelve months (June '25), but I will have to stay on the Clopidogrel for life! I've lost over two and a half stone in weight, because I can't eat enough food, without crippling pain. It's very depressing and debilitating. Is your husband on any blood thinners? If so, it could be those causing the problem. Just a thought. Good luck.
I have started to take Kefir every day recommend by a Dr it has really helped you can get it yoghurt or Yoghurt drink format. I you drink first thing in the morning. It really has helped me. Just Google Kefir for list of benefits
It is probably not related to furosemide which does not usually cause these kind of symptoms related to eating. As suggested it could be due to some other medication for example aspirin or some other cause. If it is troublesome your GP should be able to help with advice/medication. Regards.
It could very well be the heart failure but many heart failure meds have this as a side effect. I can't say iv ever had actual pain though. I have had cramps and the runs which was a constant thing. Possibly from entresto or apixban or the others. Not sure.
