Good morning all. After 30 months of unsuccessful treatment by Amlodipine and Ramipril and after a referral to a cardiologist for irregular heartbeats which seem to have been caused by higher doses of Amlodipine, I have been placed on my first new medication, Losartan 50mg. I take this at night simply to avoid any initial side effects and have been doing so for the 7 days since it was prescribed. However, every morning on waking I have really rumbling stomach and feel quite nauscius. So much so that I dont feel like breakfast and by lunchtime the feeling has increased significantly. Has anyone else had this reaction and if so does it settle down? I do feel better 30 mins after eating and dont want to be on the merry-go-round of BP medication trials, especially after 30 months of poor results. Maybe a change to taking the dose in the morning with food??
I appreciate that its only been one week, but if this side effect continues I dont think I could stay on Losartan.
Any response always greatly appreciated.

Some people seem to tolerate medications really well while others seem to not be able to and suffer with side effects I am in the latter and it is not pleasant at all
It is early days trying this new med and I possibly would at least give it 4 weeks to see if your body adjusts to it
I know you say you feel sick and you do not feel like breakfast I am not a breakfast person but since having to take meds in a morning to help with side effects I force myself no matter how I feel to just eat something small which does help
Give your body a chance to see if these side effects get better and don't stop or change the dose without talking to your Doctor but hopefully you will adjust to them
I hope your Christmas went ok despite the side effects.
I react to everything they have prescribed either initially or after a time.
The trouble with poor heart and circulatory health is that they have stats telling them medications are most effective for the majority. But what about the people line you and me?
I have also been made aware that these conditions weaken our immunity and we are more likely to contract viruses germs etc, it’s always poss you have a minor bug? So as the previous writer suggest keep taking them a bit longer and see if the stomach upset shifts. I always take my meds after food. Especially breakfast - better for your stomach. Do you take any other medications?
I’ve been on Losartan long term with no effects (I know, luck of the draw) but since my OHS I’ve been on other medication that can cause stomach acid issues. As a result I’m also on Lansoprazole long term.
Lots of discussion of the merits and otherwise of long term use of the latter but so far (20 months) I’ve no issues.
I was put on Losartan 5 years ago. I was in hospital due to an episode of AF with rapid ventricular response. They said I'd had a heart attack. I hadn't, which they finally realised after giving me an angiogram.I was discharged and put on Losartan. Over the next few days I started feeling nauseated and had stomach discomfort . I was puzzled as I hadn't felt like that in the hospital.
I kept taking the Losartan but the nausea increased to the extent that I couldn't eat at all and was struggling to drink even a sip of water.
I contacted my GP, explained the symptoms and he immediately asked if I'd been put on any new drugs!
Hadn't occurred to me that the symptoms could be caused by the Losartan.
He told me to stop taking it and prescribed Ramipril instead.
The nausea was gone within a few days. I was back to normal within a week.
Because of this I would not take any drug in the same class as Losartan if it was offered to me.
Your symptoms may improve with time or they may become extreme, as mine did. There's no way of knowing. I really hope that you don't react as badly as I did, it was awful.
I suggest you talk to your GP about it. There are many other BP drugs you could try.
I was swapped to losartin and pantoprozale after side effects of ramirpil and lansoprazole. It took me 6 months to work out ramipril was a problem for me.
I have no advice, but I do take losartin immediately after my evening meal around 8pm and so far I am not aware of any side effects.
I am on 4 x BP meds including Losartan, as every year passes I get an increasing feeling of unwellness specifically in the morning. I have a very healthy lifestyle plenty of exercise and a very healthy diet. I should feel on top of the world, but I don't. I never bought into the fact that BP meds could cause side effects but the more I think about it the more I am convinced they have an adverse effect on your general wellbeing. Having said that I don't think you would notice after a week. I visualize prescribed drugs like being poisoned with arsenic a microgram at a time, side effects can take years to materialize, they don't happen overnight.
