Bleeding gums and aspirin (after scale and polish)

On Thursday I had a scale and polish, and have since found one particular part of my gums bleeding continiously. I have been partly assured by finding evidence on another health forum that this is fairly normal with a deep clean. However, I'm concerned that with aspirin it's might be an issue. Basically it's bleeding all the time and forms jelly like clots over the tooth.

Has anyone had a similar experience, how long did it take to settle, and did you find anything to stop or ease the bleeding. My dentist doesn't open again until Monday and i's freaking me out a bit.

Medication wise, apart from aspirin I'm on Atorvastatin, Amlodipine and Ramipril.

Hello :-)

This is something that is quite normal , I get bleeding gums without a scale and polish and on Aspirin

Try not to clean where the clot is forming as that is trying to heal , rinse your mouth with salt water luke warm water with salt in

If it does get worse it is nothing to be alarmed about but 111 have an emergency dentist you could try phoning them if you really feel you need it

After today tell yourself one more day and you can contact your own dentist :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Thanks for the reassurance - I will have to read it at 4am when I'm overthinking! I've read about salt water and tried it out - it didn't seem to slow the bleeding. Is it cleansing or is it supposed to help lessen bleeding? I'm not in any discomfort or pain. I had a couple of alcoholic drinks last night which probably didn't help, and will abstain for now.

I read that hydrogen peroxide can stop bleeding gums altogether and may pop into town to get some. Will have to wear a facemask as the tooth looks pretty gruesome. The hygenist recommended a mouthwash (Periogard) that she told me to use 3-4 times daily for 4 days. I wish she'd prepared me a little better and saved me some worry. I'm very hesitant to brush my teeth - but then I'm not eating much.

Hello :-)

Salt water I believe does cleanse but also helps to heal things to

It may not have made a difference but doing it 3 to 4 times a day might start to help and I know my Dentist always seems to recommend it when I have had a tooth out over the years to help with the healing

No Alcohol is the worst thing you can drink especially when you are having these problems but you had it now and until it is sorted a good idea to abstain for now

As you are in no pain it seems more like this deep clean needs to settle down it has disrupted things as we say :-)

Maybe see if you can get that mouth wash that was recommended it could help :-)

These masks cam come in handy now not just to protect us but cover up things at a time like this and you will not look out of place wearing one :-)

Remember just one more day after today and you can talk to your own dentist who I am sure will help and reassure you :-) x

Thanks again - looking on the bright side, I'll not put as much weight on over Christmas as I'll be keeping to soft and mushy food lol

Hello :-)

Let's hope there is another week yet till Christmas and your gums will be better so you don't have to have everything liquidised :-)

I was thinking after replying to you why do things always seem to go wrong either at a weekend or holidays when you cannot get hold of your own dentist or doctor or does it just feel that way :-)

I have high hopes you will be tucking into your Christmas dinner :-) x

I have a bottle of Periogard - it took a lot of searching to find it, all the chemists in town were out of stock.

Just an update - it's a lot better already, it clotted and stayed like that, and it's kind of drier, not jellylike. Now I just have to work out when it's safe to clean it off. So relieved, thanks again.

I had dental procedures on aspirin, I had to stop Ticagrelor before. My dentist used something when I bled to stop the bleeding so despite some quite invasive work I didn’t bleed after. If it doesn’t clear up contact 111 online. It’s quicker than the phone line.

Ticagrelor is dreadful stuff, they kept me on it for 18 months and I bruised at the slightest thing.

I was glad to have it to keep my stents clear but I was more glad to be able to stop it after a year

While the blood loss, although messy, won’t be harmful you’ll need your dentist to sort this one out. Doubt if the aspirin has much to do with it.

I had a couple of glasses of wine which didn't help

how many is a couple and how large were the glasses ? Doesn’t matter as long as they make you feel better.

I had two wisdom teeth removed while I was on aspirin and an anti-platet medication. No problems incurred. I had them taken out on separate occasions just asca precaution. Ttere was very little bleeding.

my thought is to stop taking aspirin. It does cause bleeding. Check with someone at the pharmacy

I've had a couple of reviews with the phamacist. As my HA was 'probably' to do with clotting I doubt they'll take me off it.

Whenever I have dental procedures (deep cleaning or an extraction), I must be sure not to have any aspirin afterwards because my blood is quite thin. Maybe the issue you have is to do with blood clotting.

If you ring 111 they can give you dental advice. I think it's pretty normal. Keep your tongue away from it and let the clots solidify

Update - I had pasta with veg for my dinner, and afterwards the clot had gone. No bleeding since, even after brushing. It's good to hear others' experiences and get reassurance. Thanks all.
