A 'yeah but' from me too.

Vitamin D.....

I was taken by surprise when my Vitamin D levels came back low. I eat a healthy diet, I go outside everyday but I still had low Vitamin D levels.

I now take a Vitamin D supplement from September to late spring on my GP's and Cardiologist's advice.

It’s another ‘we don’t know why, but…’: vitamin D is frequently found to be deficient in a number of chronic conditions, and studies have found a link between heart disease and vitamin d deficiency. Certainly with autoimmune conditions, we know deficiency occurs as a consequence of disease, rather than lifestyle or other, causative mechanisms. Rock up to a rheumatologist for the first time and they test vit d levels as standard.

The whole aim of science over woowoo is repeatability of results so it stands to reason.

You can't beat a balanced and varied diet and exercise. Fact. As is. However another exception to diet being sufficient to supply all nutrients is in the case of anyone with digestion, malabsorption or metabolism problems... which increase in incidence within the population as it ages.

I don't know if you follow Twitter but Prof Chris Elliot OBE, from Queen's University Belfast, @QUBFoodProf, often hi lights shocking cases of food fraud and some of the worst are in the herbal remedy industry - so don't be surprised if these don't work because they are as likely to be coloured grass-seed or sticks or ground-up goodness knows what! That said, if the swapped ingredient doesn't harm you, the benefits of placebo are are often tangible. If it works, don't knock it!

well this all well and good. But there have been people like me who simply cannot tolerate Statins which was proved when I was in hospital. No you don’t need quack recipes but I’ve just had the result of my third year blood tests after my bypass and results came back no further action. I am not a martyr but I watch what I eat very carefully. Also what worries me about people who take Statins that I have talked to are often very plump and they seemed to think that Statins gives you licence to forget healthy eating which is not just important for preventing heart disease but all the other nasties we may develop

what won’t happen is huge trials to revaluate efficacy of certain medications against more natural supplements. There’s certainly a scale that will never likely be found out if the science is only performed by the pharmaceutical companies.

There’s zero motivation to pull apart their own products in trials against alternatives. What would be amazing is having truly independent scientific public health bodies, that received all funding via the tax payer and had no corporate funding or conflicts of interest. With the motivation to look at alternatives for the well being of the population.

Obviously this is also like saying I wish we had a high level care on the nhs !

I don’t know. And of course you’re right in that the development of these medications has led to successful outcomes. But unparalleled would suggest that equal studies and trials and money has been spent on natural derivatives. For instance the studies on Nattokinase as an effective blood thinner are lacking. I think maybe the biggest study is a Chinese one. Potentially it’s not as effective but you get any large pharmaceutical searching for alternatives to medications they already have which increase the value of their stock. Surely there could be more potential in nature ?

I don’t know. In the meantime I’ll hope for potential change and better regulation. And I will continue taking my meds and hope neither my afib or cad kills me in the meantime.
