I started taking 1.25mg Bisoprolol daily yesterday and feel absolutely shattered and sick. I’m having dizzy spells and genuinely am too tired and queasy to do anything.
I’ve read on here that others have suffered this and it wears off, but how long could that take. Also I’ve read that others have switched to another beta-blocker?

I have been on Bisoprolol since May following a mitral valve repair. I started taking in hospital and had a dizzy spell on probably day 2 but kept on with them. I couldn’t comment on if they make you feel shattered or not as I started them just after surgery. Also I am on 2.5mg and have spread doses to morning and evening as initially was ok in morning but heart would race in the evening.
I am now back in work and started exercising whilst still on them.
Maybe give them a bit longer?
I think some cardiac meds can take months to affect, possibly worth looking up.
Also is there anything else that could be causing tiredness?
Thank you. I’m pretty certain it is these as the only other thing I’ve started this week is the statins and I’ve not read of this as a symptom. It definitely feels like a druggy kind of tiredness and it is preventing me working, or doing anything else at all really.
Hi Wolfgirl71 I was moved from metroprolol 12.5 mg twice to 2.5 bisoprolol a day. My cardiologist think I will be better with bisoprolol for my EF . I was used to with metroprolol. Only started bisoprolol two days ago. But it is making me dizzy , sleepy and tired..some tightness in chest. Did it settled for you ? If not what was an option, my Heart rate is lower compare to when I took metroprolol
I’ve been taking Bisoprolol for approximately 5 months now and have actually increased my dose to 2.5mg twice a day and having no bad effects. It took a couple of weeks I think to settle on the initial dose. In fact now I cannot stop taking them or my heart symptoms return.
I’ve had all my tests now, just waiting for an appointment with my cardiologist to discuss what happens next.
Thanks Wolfgirl71 that's a very good news, I hope mine settled soon. since I was in BB before I was hoping it wouldn't be this bad on bisoprolol . Good luck with you cardiologist visit, hope all goes well for you.
Hello
Everything you have read about how some get on with these and others not is true but I would give yourself a few weeks to see if your body adjusts to them and if not then talk with your Doctor and see if they will try you on something else but fingers crossed you might not have to it is early days and you could very well start to suite them
It is day 2 of taking them , 1.25mg is a very small dose one of the lowest you can take
Do you think because of what you have read you could have had a fear of them before you started them ?
I ask this as this is something that happens with me
If you really feel you do not want to try and see if things will settle because you cannot tolerate them then contact your Doctor as soon as you can and try and get them changed
Thank you, I’m just not sure I can cope with it. I feel so sick and dizzy, like I’ve just come off a roundabout. I was only just getting my appetite back and I can barely eat now.
Yup I agree I’m on 10 msg and tbh it would r phase me if they put mine up higher, I think with everything else I take the small side effects they give me isn’t worth bothering about . Everyone is different though .
Oh whoop Dee do! What an answer! I think mines caused by Covid, apparently lot of people are getting it as a result. There’s a lot of knock on effects with the organs, they all work in conjunction with each other. Can end up taking one drug to counter the side effects etc etc.
I started on exactly the same 3 wks ago after having a stent operation, same as you they make me feel so tired some days waking up at 8am and back in bed for 11am, some days falling asleep for 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon, laying on the sofa all day, im trying so hard to see a gp or my consultant but havent got any replies yet, recovery is good but the drugs are a nightmare
I'd say tell your GP or pharmacist immediately and stop taking them. There are so many horror stories on here about the side effects of Bisoprolol. There are alternatives.
Please don’t stop taking any prescribed medication without discussing it first with your GP. I’m now happily taking 2.5 a day, but it wasn’t without a bit of juggling at first. It was the dizziness that caught my GPs attention.
Yeah , no she needs to give it longer than 2 days to see if the side effects setting down first . Never stop taking a prescribed medication without consulting the doctor
I was already suffering with dizziness prior to starting Bisoprolol but the Bisoprolol made it considerably worse (my dizziness feels like sea sickness without the nausea) so it was almost constant. My GP tried anti sickness medication to see if it would help but it didn’t so he swapped me to Nebivolol. I had no side effects at all with that. I was on Bisoprolol for a couple of months to make sure the side effects weren’t just my body getting used to it.
I started on bisoprolol following my HA and it quickly made me feel dizzy and light headed. I put the tiredness down to other medication. I started on a higher dose but spoke to my GP who gradually reduced it. It lowers your blood pressure which was the cause. I still felt dizzy on 1.25mg (lowest dose) and was told I could stop taking them. I’ve been absolutely fine since. I wasn’t offered any alternative as I didn’t need them. Give it some time to settle as others have said and if no difference speak to your GP. Hope you feel better sooner rather than later. Chris
I felt the same as you on a low dose of statins. After a month ( seems a long time I know) my symptoms disappeared and all is ok.I could have changed my medication but decided to stick with it and pleased I did.You will benefit from a talk with your support team.Good luck going forward.
Hi- bisoprolol is the smallest pill I take but boy does it pack a punch!!! I settled on 1.25 after a few weeks but when they tried to increase it I felt like a zombie- so went back to 1.25. Give it a little while - hopefully it will settle down
Try to stick with it, as Gail967 said, it's a v small tablet but wow does it wallop. They started me on 5mg after my HA, I've always had slightly lower than ave blood pressure, but this dropped my BP into my boots! I had zero energy for anything. I'm now on 1.25mg after stepping down to 2.5 then to now.
Here's hoping you'll settle down to it, I understand it's v good at what it does, maybe it would help if the prescriber could explain it's importance and why they've placed you on it.
I too, take bisoporal. It took a couple of weeks to get used to it. When I was reviewed the Dr doubled the dose. I took the same amount at bedtime and found this minimised the affect. Hope this helps.
I was on Bisoprolol for a month and could not take it anymore because of the awful side effects, I also had vomiting and diahrrea the whole month I was on them.I had to stop them myself as the GP told me to carryon with them, but I decided not to and I send him and email stating I did stop as I was also loosing weight and not eating and was getting depressed.
He did change my tablet to Atenolol now, which I am managing to tolerate taking it, but I am one off a 100 that has problems with taking tablets. (Hope you get sorted) as I can assure you it's not very nice the side effects that we get.
I am one week into taking 1.25mg Bisoprolol and having similar side effects. I am crazy dizzy so not driving, and have had to sleep for 2-3 hours every afternoon since starting on it. Spoke to GP yesterday as I was supposed to double up. They advised to stick to the lower dose for another few weeks and see if the side effects settle down. I’m off work at the moment anyway so can allow my body to to get over the side effects but they’re horrible. I have crazy palpitations and a higher-than-usual load of ectopic beats. Hoping it will all clear up soon and that I don’t have to go through it all again when I double up the dose in a few weeks!
Hello Wolfgirl71.I had the same instant negative response on 2.5 mg. The fatigue was overwhelming. I remained on it for 4 &1/2 months during which time the fatigue lessened, but never subsided entirely. I had to give up any sort of exercise. I also developed back pain which, after doing extensive reading, I discovered can also be a side effect.
Coming off the drug, the fatigue and back pain disappeared. I regretted not calling the doctor earlier about all this.
I was taking it for BP control. There are other options for this.
If you need a beta blocker, I would not hesitate to report your symptoms promptly, and hopefully try an alternate one.
Hi, I started on 2.5mg a couple of months ago. The first couple of days I was completely fatigued and couldn’t do anything - but after that started to feel better. I have been on a couple of different beta blockers before and this one seems to be better than those for me.
I was having similar side effects so arranged to see my GP, and after a discussion he advised me to take the Bisoprolol at bedtime so the worst part of the effects would be whilst I was asleep, I am still lethargic but not as bad.
Hi I struggle to take any beta blockers. I started on Bisopropol, which lowered my blood pressure too much and caused me to faint. Others I have tried tend also to lower my blood pressure and make me feel very tired. Also they have had no noticeable affect on the af. I now manage without, although I do take anti-coagulants, with no side effects.
I've been taking bisoprolol daily for 10 years, I can't remember if I had those side effects back then? But, I take all my meds at night, just before I go to bed, I've found that works for me x
I'm on 2.5 mg Bisoorolol with 1.25 mg as PIP. I didn't get quite the same side effects as you but they were horrible. I can't honestly say how long they were a real nuisance, a week or two I think, but it took longer for everything to settle down properly. I do still get tired and have cold hands and feet, but I would be resistant to change as they are doing their job, and I react badly to so many medications so I would rather stick with what I know.
