has anyone watched the documentary Knives over Forks? Cutting out meat and dairy to prevent, and in some cases cure, various cancers and repair heart arteries. What was your opinion of it?

Dear leach234

I have been a life long vegetarian and a 30 year plus vegan and neither, I am afraid, saved me from a triple bypass and having a CRT-D fitted.

So what’s going on? The truth is that there is no answer to that question and with all things moderation is the key so we are told.

Meat is far better for you than any processed Vegan stuff will ever be as long as you buy well, those that still think a whole chicken should be a couple of quid already known the problems their buying, and rightly so.

Was it that long ago that meat eating was so expensive that you were lucky to have it one day a week?

The Vegan camp will claim this and that, the meat camp will claim the opposite, thats the way the world goes, every now and then a health benefit will be thrown in and up our ears will prick with hope.

If for any reasons you decide to become/try being Vegan can I suggest that you try the vegetarian route first as still being able to have eggs and dairy is a simple way to maintain getting complex vitamins etc that are needed for a healthy life.

Living a Vegan/Vegetarian life is not easy and can add more burden to an already difficult life, its more complex than people think and to do it right involves a lot of background work.

Who hasn’t heard the “ oh my friends vegan/vegetarian and they look so ill “ its a good chance that if they are not doing it right that they could be.

Cut down, think about where and how that meat got on your plate and you will be fine, same with dairy follow the same rules.

Take care

Good Morning,

Just had my Daily 7.5mg Bisoprolol and another half a dozen pills, and on current evidence I am not giving them up for a Carrot !!! Don't get me wrong if anyone wishes to be a Vegan it's fine by me. I just don't believe the NHS or NICE guidelines would advocate bypass surgery etc if we could all be cured by eating Fruit and Veg.

Regards

Hi leach234I think there definately are proven benefits to eating a lot more fruit and veg.Its what you cut out or cut down on that counts. Some meat and fish has some essential nutrients but too much can cause disease. Pies chips and ice cream are not health foods. The Mediterranean diet is alright but too much olive oil can't be that great. Greece has some of the worst number for heart disease. And Italy is becoming as obese as America. Glucose plays a big role. What you put in your mouth is almost as important as not smoking. What's the saying? Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Two of my kids are vegans , the boy/man is plant based and does not eat any of those ready made fake meats he is strictly fruit and veg all cooked in a healthy way , my daughter has been vegan since she was 14 so that’s 11 years and she eats anything at all , plates of pastas , loads of chips , fried rice etc , if there is no meats or dairy she will eat it . I find her diet one of the most Unhealthy I’ve ever come across . If you want to be vegan give it a try it won’t do you any harm , it also won’t do you any good , not unless you are strict with it . Good luck

Posts about diets generate more heat that light. Many people have strong opinions about food and they're simply not prepared to consider any alternative opinions.

But amongst all the noise there are a couple of things that emerge.

Amongst all the differing evidence what does virtually everyone agree on?

Highly processed foods, especially highly processed meats containing nitrates (ie ham, bacon, chorizo, pepperoni, etc) are really bad news. But as a country we continue to guzzle down boat loads of ham, bacon, chorizo and pepperoni. I wonder why?

Another area where all the authorities concur is the health benefits of plenty of fresh fruit and veg, but again as a country we fall woefully short of even the bare minimum requirement of "five a day". Again, how much evidence do we need before we'll get the simple stuff right?

There is no science at all behind the recommendation of "five a day".

I will stick to good quality meat and organic dairy, plus plenty of fruit and veg. I have reached 71 with clear arteries, just an unexplained LBBB, with issues that have largely been resolved.

Dear you,

Well as always you can tell be your writing and reply that you take care as to what goes in that engine of yours without being obsessive about it.

That to me is the right form of balance, just being aware is all that is needed and get on with your life.

When I needed a protein boost during my worst moments, I found pea protein was amazing { too good hence was carrying a few extra pounds } but it was like living on your own wind farm ! But I was alright because at the time I had the dog that I could blame.

As always take care, you are gifted with your answers to an amazing collection of questions that are thrown up on here

And Oh how I miss my local independent bakery's absolutely delicious, gorgeous, tasty, crisp flaky pastry, slightly spicy filling, calorie laden sausage rolls!! 😋😍😩💔

Me to - but I've been virtuously sticking to the rolled oats, fresh berries & fat free live yoghurt for brekkies every morning. 😇 It's just so hard to walk past the bakery with the delicious smells wafting out and I think they must do it on purpose. It's next door to a home-made ice cream shop too with a fresh pizza place on the other side! AAARRGGHHH As my Mum used to say "these things are sent to try us". Certainly 'tries' me walking past them to buy my fat free yoghurts!😆😆
