I have read that porridge made with soya milk helps lower cholesterol and also aubergines. I slice up raw aubergines and add it to my porridge alongside a sprinkling of cinnamon and ginger every morning.

The BHF webpages have plenty of suggestions for a heart healthy diet. And in addition to diet and exercise, such things as reducing alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and avoiding being overweight or worse obese are also important.

British heart foundation have a lot of information on their website on this , plus a recipe finder. I use this a lot. 3 portions of oats a day is supposed to help lower cholesterol so I would try and incorporate them if you don’t already. We switched to flora light rather than butter, and use olive oil in cooking. We also check labels all the time now, looking specifically at the saturated fats.

I tried the Esselstyn diet for a month as a test. The simple version is no more than 10% of your diet can come from fats (equivalent to a tablespoon of olive oil a day), no meat, no dairy etc. Mostly veg/fruit/grains/beans. After a month my ldl was down by 1/3. My conclusion is that it works, but you need to be fully committed. It's really quite difficult unless you have a partner who is willing to help, because it's a lot of work, and pretty much rules out restaurant meals and dining with friends. And you need to make sure you are getting enough of certain vitamins like B12.

I've settled on a diet that allows me to "cheat" once in a while. So, mostly oatmeal and other fibres for breakfast, low-fat lunch, normal dinner (no red meat/pork) but smaller portions of things like sauces. Also no processed foods and nearly no saturated fats

But I'll have a couple of slices of pizza (without meat) now and again, or a bit of creamy dessert. Otherwise it's just too depressing.

I think to significantly lower ldl through diet depends a lot on where you are starting from. If you already eat fairly healthfully you probably can't do much, but if you're a chips n cheese kind of person, you could make significant progress.

Studies I've read regarding dietary fiber (oatmeal/psyllium) have found that you potentially could get single-digit reductions in ldl, over and above what statins will do.

Go vegetarian or even vegan that will do it.

All the best.

Good morning Kelvos, I have Angina, and my heart surgeon advised me to eat healthily to minimise the risk of ateries getting fured up. So here is my daily routeen. Breakfast: Poridge with Honey poured over, not a massive amount, then I add about a dozen Blueberries to it along with 2 cups of filtered coffee. We have a normal smallish lunch, which usually has at least 3 different vegs, followed by in my case, a small yoghurt with a dozen prunes and a few Blueberries as well, and a glass of water. Mid afternoon, I make a us both a cup of coffee and we have a biscuit. In the evenning we have a sandwich filled with whatever we fancy and some salad, and I have a small bowl of fresh fruit covered with yoghurt. On Tuesday we usually have Salmon. On the other days we have whatever meat we fancy, or even a small meat pie, and on Friday we let ourselves go by me fetching Cod & chips from a drive through.Saturday lunch we just have a bowl of soup followed by a small yoghurt and a sandwich in the evenning. Sunday is just a normal lunch with again plenty of FRESH vegetables and a similar teatime sandwich. The above information was very simlilar to our usual menu, which pleased my heart surgeon, so we didn't have to change much, except the bowl of fresh fruit was an addition. Another benefit is, that eating the fruit helps me with my constipation, something that has been a side effect from the new medication. This diet helps me to control my weight as well, and I have a weekly check on our bathroom scales.People get in a bit of a tither about eating healthily and loosing weight. It is quite simple really, cut out unhealthy fats ( burgers etc) and sugar, then reduce the size of your portions and add fresh fruit and veg into your diet. By sticking to this, you should get your weight down to a level at which it will stableise. I was putting weight on and got to well over 14 stone, my current weigth is just 13 stone, a weight that I am comfortable with. I hope that this has helped you and the changes aren't massive, it just takes time and patience, and may save money.

I have been told to try and stick to a Mediterranean type diet and avoid anything with palm oil in it. Check labels it’s in everything (bread all those low fat spreads etc). Also told olive oil is good as long as you are not heating it up and cooking with it as it changes the properties if it. Have been told that rapeseed oil is the healthiest to use when cooking with oil.
