There was a news item this morning about a piece of research published in the BMJ. Whilst a vegan/vegetarian diet reduces the risk of a cardiovascular event the risk of a stroke increases. You cannot win can you!

I am a vegetarian who also likes vegan food,I think whatever you do it all has risk, but hopefully if it’s just in moderation it cannot be that bad ?

I was vegetarian for some years and don't eat a lot of meat even now, though I do love fish. Hope you don't mind me asking, obviously I know the diffence between a vegetarian and a vegan, but you said you also like vegan foods, what are the differences? Thanks

I never eat soya as have an intolerance to it - nausea, stomach cramps, etc. It was confirmed by allergy testing. Nasty stuff! ☹️

I read it this morning and was shocked. I’ve cut meat out completely since my heart attack. They said it may be due to B12 deficiency. I think I’ll go back to roast beef and Yorkshire puddings because I can’t win whatever I do. 😔

A vegan diet does not necessarily mean it is healthy. Oreo cookies are vegan, as are chips and French fries. A whole food plant based diet with no added oils, salt and sugar is the healthiest diet I have learned so far from various prominent plant based doctors, not a vegan junk food diet. Read Dr Esselstyn prevent and reverse heart disease. Also the cookbook by the same name is really good. Also read Eat to Live by Dr Furhman for the Nutritiarian style way of eating. The Starch Solution by Dr. McDougall is also excellent. WFPB consists of fruit, vegetables, tubers, legumes, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, grains, and marine plants. This means no animal products and no oils. Some doctors allow a little salt or sugar sprinkled on food but not in the cooking itself. If you are interested, read these books to start, but there are many more supporting a WFPB diet.
