My God it never rains till it pours does it, all this and now tooth ache.
How dismissive of your dentist over your husbands illness, I would contact your heart nurse and take advice from them.
I had no problems with my dentist, he was just a little bit more attentive than usual {even phoned me the next day after the extraction }
I am only on a low dose aspirin, so maybe it was easier for me, but there must be a way around the problem as we are told that “mouth hygiene “ is really important to our continued health.
I used the stranded things while waiting for my appointment, one is good old fashioned clove oil and using a “sensitive “ toothpaste packed around the offending tooth.
You have both been through so much, but I’m sorry to say that it doesn’t stop the normal day to day things marching on {tooth ache, washing, hovering etc etc}
Thanks Blue1958 Yes it is true. We have to keep going.
The cardiologist said that it should not be a problem. Just stop taking blood thinning medication for 3 days before extraction. It is a matter of getting a dentist to do it I suppose.
Hope my experience of a tooth extraction can help to relate for you. It wasn’t the greatest of experiences for me but I hope that the mistakes I made will be of help for you. I had a stent and was due a tooth extraction 3 weeks later, the dentist wanted approval from the cardiologist, which I got. No mention of stopping the ‘blood thinners’, Clopidogrel, aspirin, but then I was much closer in time to my operation that your husband is. I was also on Apixaban (half dose as I also have AF) but I wish I had been able to stop the Clopidogrel and Aspirin for a couple of days beforehand. For me I had some bleeding after the extraction and this just caused me extreme anxiety because I was on blood thinners. The extraction after care was to bathe the area in a strong salt water solution, you have to be careful that you don’t overdo the salt it as it threw me into dehydration and awful times.Also make sure that the dentist uses the right numbing agent. Mine used Lignospan which when I looked it up afterwards says that it shouldn’t be used for certain types of heart patients. It doesn’t mean that it was the wrong numbing agent, but it’s the worry that plays on your mind that is the hardest thing, so sort that out with the dentist beforehand(when you find one)
Thanks Goosebumps365 I appreciate you sharing your experience. It enables me to look out for points where we have to be careful.
Thanks again.

Shaivi
I had toothache as soon as I came out of hospital after my cabg x5 went to the dentist who said it was an infection and gave me antibiotics.After 6 weeks I had enough and demanded he take it out.At the time I was on apixaban.He took it out no problem at all. What a relief,and I'm afraid of dentists.Good luck.x
Don't assume that the achy tooth needs to be extracted! Being on blood thinners is not a contraindication to dental treatment and any dentist should be aware of issues involved.
