Hi everyone. Does anyone suffer from tinnitus? I've had it for a few years but at a level that Icould switch off from. At the beginning of March I was prescribed 14 days worth of aspirin 300mg for suspected amaurosis fugax. During this time the tinnitus became really loud all the time, I read that this can be a side effect of aspirin. The tinnitus improved for a while after stopping the aspirin but its back with a vengeance. Ive been taking clopidogrel & atorvastatin for almost 12 weeks now and wondering if either one of these tablets could be the cause. I appreciate any responses to my question. Thank you

I've had it for years, no idea if it's related to any of my meds.I once mentioned it to my Dr and was met with quite a negative response and told I had to live with it.

Although it's always there, most of the time I don't notice, but sometimes it drives me mad, 🤪

Hello Villagelife,I don't know if you've seen it, but there's an excellent community on the Healthunlocked site run by the British Tinnitus Association and there you will find a lot of people who not only live and deal with tinnitus (T) on a daily basis but all sorts of hints, tips, help and advice based on evidence (BTA) and experience (forum members).I too have T and can say from experience that drugs can trigger it and/or cause it to spike, including common over the counter medication such as paracetamol and aspirin, though the incidence and intensity seems to vary from person to person.

On the list of Prescription Medications, Drugs, Herbs & Chemicals Associated with Tinnitus put together by the American Tinnitus Association, clopidogrel is not listed but Lipitor (atorvastatin) is.

This list can be found at: ata.org/sites/default/files...

I hope this is helpful for you.

Yes I have had it for 30 years. I noticed it was worse after taking paracetamol

I've also had it for years, probably due to loud bands I went to see in my younger days. Its got really bad since being on medication for the past few weeks. Stress might not be helping either.

"Loud bands" that'll be it then 😁

Some younger people are quite jealous when I tell them of the bands I saw, really young people say "who?" 🤔Makes me feel quite ancient 😂

Dear Villagelife

I get along just fine with Clopidogrel. But from time to time I need to stop, eg for minor surgery, and then I take low dose aspirin. But not both.

Enjoy your cruise

Dear Villagelife.

Yes I do suffer with tinnitus, both ears , high pitched and have done for years after being given cisplatin for cancer many moons ago.

My tinnitus does not change at all, but after I came around from the bypass surgery it had gone! I told a few people who weren’t that interested and who could blame them, they were saving my life and I was going on about ringing in my ear!

Slowly the tinnitus came back and soon was at its normal level. I am on aspirin but very small dose and not on the other drugs you are on.

I would contact the DR if you can tie your increased tinnitus down to the medication then Im sure they can help you, what about having a word with your pharmacist? I found mine incredibly knowledgeable over side effects of medication.

I was lucky that years ago I was offered many things to manage the condition, I had a white noise generator by my bed and even tried special headphones, they all worked, the only problem i had was when I stopped using them the tinnitus seemed a lot worse.

So like you I went down the excepting route and hypnotherapy {now thats another story} really helped.

I hope that you find answers to your problem.

Take care and please keep us informed.

Thank you will do. I'll have a word with the pharmacist. I think unless you experience tinnitus its hard to understand what its like.

in reply to Villagelife

Yes I totally agree with you, and I am lucky { strange but true} that my tinnitus is constant, it must be a total nightmare with it changing like yours does.

I got upset when it stopped that time {bypass op} because I realised for the first time in years just how disabilitating it was, now its just back as a part of me.

Hi VillagelifeI’ve had tinnitus for years and heart meds sometimes made it worse’ but since my hearing wasn’t that great’ I had a hearing aid fitted and since then the tinnitus has completely gone, try and get a appointment with the audiology department that might help’ good luck.

My wife had tinnitus fur years, she has just been fitted with a hearing aid in that ear and it disappears. Apparently it is a common fix, if so why it took years I have no idea...maybe the pandemic!

Hi villagelifeI had tinnitus since 2006 and to be honest it bloody kills me some times.

I have tried all the treatments and Gadgets and not one of them has worked all I can say is that there is no cure there is no remedies to stop it you just have to learn to live with it and carry on with your life and don’t let it affect you otherwise it will drive you mad good luck.

Good luck Andy

Thank you, I wont buy any gadgets then. I'm trying a tinnitus app at night time it helps but the tinnitus is still there. In the scheme of things I guess its not such a bad thing to live with compared to some.

I have had tinnitus in both ears since my 20's (now 68). I have to have TV or radio on 24/7. I'm now very used to it . After my stents I also have pulsatile tinnitus but it isn't all the time. Things could be worse than tinnitus.

I've had tinnitus for years. Recently started on asprin. Astovastatin ivabraden. Tinnitus has got worse since. Had Asthma all my life and some of drugs for that made it worse. Until I was put on different meds. I wear a hearing aid and does help a bit.

Hope you find some relief.

Thank you aspirin definitely made mine a great deal worse but not on that now. I did read that atorvastatin can make it worse although it is a rare side affect apparently.
