Yes it is a chess board and you have to count the number of squares you can see. Sometimes they will contain both colours...

My first punt was 65 but then I realised thee are 2x2 ones that can appear in lots of positions, and 3x3 that logically appear in less up to the 8x8 that is only there once. My head hurts!
