Low Bp after running

Hi folks,

Haven’t posted here for a while, just getting on with life and navigating the strange journey we’ve all been on over the last 12 months.

Massive HA 2 years ago, single stent, significant scarring leading to EF 34% on last MRI in Jan 2020. Haven’t had a scan since, but taking Entresto, Eplerenone, carvedilol, aspirin, rosuvastatin and feeling pretty good, working full time. After I had an ICD implanted (May 2020) my cardiologist said ‘do as much exercise as you possibly can’ up to a max. HR of 150.

So, I’m running a steady 5k every other day (c. 7m/Km) cross country and it feels fine, but when I get home and check BP it’s always very low. Usual Bp (thanks to meds) is c. 96/63, but after a run it goes as low as 80/55. Will be checking with my cardiologist, but wondered if any other post-HA/HF runners have experienced this? Feels like Bp should head in the opposite direction with exercise. When I lift weights systolic Bp does indeed go up, but diastolic tends to stay level or decrease slightly.

Cheers, J

Thank you! Makes sense to me, and I love the storm drain analogy 😆 Looks like you’re a pretty dedicated runner, so kudos to you for adapting that pursuit to your ‘new normal’ and going from strength to strength.

Ps. Commiserations on a poor weekend of results from a fellow Welshman. Anglesey must be looking beautiful at this time of year!

Similar experience for me as TWU, my BP was dropping as low as 76/48 post run, spoke with my Cardiologist who said almost exactly what TWU explained re dehydration etc.

In my case he did adjust my Bisoprolol, so may be worth a mention, obviously depending on what dose you are on.

Interesting read.

Off topic, but managed to do my 1st 5k in 12 months last week, built it up slowly since gyms re-opened, achilles seems to be holding up.
