Hi allAfter Cardiology put me on 2.5mg Bisoprolol last Nov for Bigemniny & (8%) Ventricular Ectopics I discovered that although it reduces my BP lower than the BP meds i was already on, it also occassionally spikes my diastolic BP sky high.
GP said it shouldn't do this & to discuss it with the Cardiologist at the follow up appointment but I've just found out that I won't see the Cardiologist for my 2nd appointment until Dec (13 months from my 1st appointment although I have now had my MRI but no idea of the results).
My high BP was under control on 10mg Ramipril, 2.5mg Bendroflumethiazide, 10mg Amlodipine, 4mg Doxazosine - all of which were prescribed to try & keep my diastolic BP under 90.
With the 2.5mg of Bisoprolol on top of my BP meds ... the diastolic goes down to 78 or 88 (which the GP is pleased with) however it reasonably regularly spikes up to 95, but i've also caught it at 119, 124, 150, and as high as 178.
It doesn't seem to stay that high for long and it doesn't always appear to be linked to when the ecgopics occur either , but I'm not sure it that it's very good that it's doing this at all.

It only spikes - I guess for a few minutes & then goes straight down again, which is why I've not bothered A&E with it as it's really difficult to catch it occurring. I take BP morning & evening & record it for discussion with Cardiologist as per GP recommendation - I'm just highlighting when machine shows heart is erratic, when diastolic BP is over 90 & when oxy level falls below 93%.
Buy a better BP monitor throw the old one in the bin
Just for info ... I got a new BP Machine and have been monitoring still and it's still happening so it's back to the GP firme now as somethings not right with either me or the meds! Take care
⁸I will look for z new machine, but I dont believe there's anything wrong with the BP machine as last time we checked both mine & hubbys BP with it at the surgery and it corresponded with the GP's machine - it's just I've never been at the GP when the diastoylic spikes.
I've been on all of the BP meds for years as without them my BP goes up to 210sys/120dia and stays there so they know there's an issue with the diastoylic BP normally.
With BP meds only & experimenting with mixes of meds and dosages over a number of years we'd finally got it down below 105, then 100 then 95 but GP has always wanted diastolic under 90 which we'd achieved.
But that was pre me not being well, and before the bigemniy and ectopics arithmia were diagnosed last year & now i'm on Bisoprolol which has reduced my pulse rate down to only 58 to 60 beats a minute,
So now the BP is all over the place (since Nov) & every BP reading is different but usually it's doing ok still e.g. 123sty/77dias, 111s/87d, 126s/83d, 137s/89d, with some higher days e.g. 154s/92d,
The high spikes have been 150sys/101dias, 121s/105d, 152s/112d, 127s/114d, 140s/116d, 147s/117d, 134s/119d, 145s/124d, 146s/126d, 154s/136d, and 161s/150d BUT a re-reading 5 min later goes right back to low or normal BP.
[There's only been one very off reading from earlier this year that seems incorrect at 116s/178d which maybe i noted down wrong. ]
sounds like your machine is faulty. Normal systolic is a higher reading than dystolic (in my case 113/60) get you health care to take it if your worried. And home monitoring you should always take it twice every time using tge second reading
Apart from one reading all are correct (see edited post). Readings at healthcare are the same as at home - except we've not been able to pick up the spikes there as they are only occurring occassionly.
BUT given the replys i've ordered a new BP machine anyway.
When the spike happens again i can add it into the memory on the new machine & I'll try & remember to take pictures too ...... because if no one here believes me it's happening then the Cardiolist probly wont either.
Thanks for your rely Thatwasunexpected The systolic reading is always higher (except for one single reading / instance) & I have edited my further post below to make this clear.
I have extremely high hospitalisation level BP normally without meds so now I've been on 4 meds for it for years & am very used to recording my BP at home & calibrating the home readings against the GP's machine at least one a year.
It is the diastolic pressure the GP has always been concerned about but we'd got my BP stable, & these spikes are only occurring since the start of the heart arrithmia & my heart rate being lowered so much by the Bisroprolol.
