Just had a call from hospital, they had an emergency in today and because of knock on effect my op is cancelled. Feel drained with that news but hopefully the emergency is ok, you can’t moan in these situations.

So gutted for you.

I know what you mean about the emergency and it’s very kind of you to think in that way. I do hope you get your surgery soon.

Keep positive. It will happen. This waiting is the worst time.

Regards

❤️Maisie❤️

Oh so sorry it’s been cancelled, and yes the waiting for sure is the worse part. I am sure you will be called very quickly, your attitude to the poor soul who was the emergency is fantastic. Don’t unpack your hospital bag!

Best wishes Pauline

It's difficult when you have prepared mentally, even though it's unavoidable, it can be distressing. All the best in a quick new date. Take care. Moni.

This happened to me twice. Thankfully my operation eventually took place just days before Covid hit. It’s difficult, but they will get to you. Love the positive attitude. Good luck!

I also had 2 last minute cancellations and it is tough. You’ve made your preparations and mentally prepared yourself only for it to be cancelled.

Keep positive though and be prepared for a last minute call up - I got the call just a few days after the second cancellation and I am currently just 1 week post op following a Aortic Root Replacement and Valve Repair.

Mine got cancelled...albeit because my asthma flared up. I was gutted to. Self employed and stressed about getting back. But a couple of weeks on I actually feel more prepared for next time...he says 😜. Do something lovely today .. so sorry. Let's keep fingers crossed for the emergency.

This happened to me too. I was booked for mitral valve replacement on 13 May. That was cancelled on 6 May. Rebooked for 19 May. I went into hospital on 18 May and was all prepped and ready the next day but at 3 pm they told me that there had been complications with the patient before me and it was too late in the day to start. So I went home, very upset. I was then rebooked for 9 June. Then shifted onto 10 June, when it actually happened. By then I was more nervous about being cancelled again and my pre-op nerves didn’t kick in until I was actually being wheeled into theatre. Each time I was told to isolate from my husband and daughters for 2 weeks before surgery and so in the end I isolated for a total of 5 weeks prior to surgery. My younger daughter (12) in particular struggled with this. Obviously it played havoc with my nerves too. My surgeon told me that this is happening because he is being told to book 2 operations every day to catch up post Covid but it is generally just not feasible when operations like mine are standardly 4-6 hours without complications. So they are frequently, very apologetically, having to send people home, like they did me, with all the associated costs of staying in hospital tonight before, and the emotional costs to the patient and families. It’s really not good.

I am, thank you. Like you I feel we shouldn’t moan because these things happen due to people being worse off than us, but the NHS is also under such pressure with unreasonable demands being placed on staff. Each and every member of staff who looked after me was amazing and worked incredibly hard and for that I feel so grateful.

Hi Carluke. It's a bit annoying to say the least! My husband was 5th time lucky when he had his quad bypass in 2018. He was actually on his way to the operating theatre the 5th time when they turned the trolley around and brought him back to the ward!!There are families somewhere who need their emergency relative helped and that's the way to look at someone who's taken your place.

I'm sure you'll be mended soon. xxxx

5Times! You both must have worried more about being cancelled than the op.

Handel profile image

You got that right!!! The round trip to and from the hospital was over 100 miles!! I made sure I waited when he finally went down to theatre - sat with a coffee and read the paper and then checked in with the ward staff! You'll be more fortunate I'm sure. Keep us posted.

Sending virtual hugs! Jan xxx

He's not looked back and it's so kind of you to ask. how he's doing. He was 68 when he had the bypass and it's given him a new lease of life.

Hope everything goes well for you xxxx

So sorry Carluke. You psyche yourself up for something so important and do all you can to prepare yourself, and this is such a blow, but I do admire your positive attitude. Still, allow yourself to have a rant about it, even if only privately or on this site, because you have to let out your feelings, even though it isn't anyone's fault. Hoping very much that you will get your new date very soon - we'll all be waiting.

Sorry to hear that. After my HA, I spent a total of 23 days in hospital, mostly waiting for various tests which were constantly being delayed by emergencies. It was a comfort to know that I wasn't one of them!
