My cardiologist recommended taking red rice yeast as I think it was one of those products he’s getting a commission for. My cholesterol is just over the limit but I am reading that red rice yeast can have side effects like statins. Natures best won’t sell it as they say you can’t guarantee an accurate dosage.
Looking for views, is red rice yeast a good supplement or something to avoid?

I would like to know the answer as well. I have been taking it for about a year as cannot tolerate statins.Thought it might help They are not very forthcoming with info when I had my last blood tests as I am on Apixaban and you only get a phone call which I hate as wear a hearing aid. Regards to all.
You do not state where you are but I suspect you are not in Great Britain. I looked into Red Rice Yeast a year or two ago when it made a few headlines. The active ingredient is indeed similar to that in Lovastatin but the concentration is variable. There is also potential of contamination by toxins. The suggestion is also that the maximum reduction in cholesterol is similar to plant stanols (e.g. Benecol), at about 10% plus/minus 5%.
Personally I would rather take a statin (which I do). The consultant pushing it does strike me as odd. It reminded me of when I was in hospital. A bank nurse (retired) kept offering every patient Movicol to the extent it became a running joke he had shares in the company!
I’m a Brit living in Spain. I am waiting for the state hospital appointment following an ecg at the doctors showing my heart might be enlarged but there is a delay with Covid 19.
I joined bupa Sanitas to get the tests and the private cardiologist recommended red rice yeast. I speak Spanish but find it hard to understand so having this forum has been reassuring for me. Thank you for your advice.
