Bisoprolol & erectile dysfunction??.

I am interested to hear guys opinions on whether Bisoprolol caused you to get better erections, worse, or no difference.

Please quote what milligram of the medication you take, your age and how long youve been taking the medication.

I know erectile dysfunction is listed as a rare side effect in the info leaflet with Bisoprolol, but surely high blood pressure can commonly cause erectile dysfunction so lowering blood pressure should help with getting and maintaining an erection?.

The reason for my query is i have just been started on 1.25mg per day about 4 days ago for high blood pressure.

I am 42 years old and my wife and i enjoy a healthy sex life so am anxious for this to remain the same.

Many thanks for your input chaps!.

Andrew.

I was on 1.25mg as well for 8 months after heart surgery, age 50, noticed no effects either way.

Hi Andrew

I guess you weren’t expecting a women to reply. My husband had a stent fitted 2 years ago in December at the age of 41. He has been put on Bisoprolol 5mg and he has suffered no side effects in that department to date. All is functioning as it should. I hope that helps put your mind at ease.

I was on 5mg after heart attack at age 46 had to stop them after first month as the wee fellow wouldn't work

I was prescribed 1.25mg as part of the initial raft of drugs following my stents, although I never had high blood pressure and was taken off them by my GP because they were preventing me exercising properly. They were also preventing other activities as well, particularly maintaining things. I am not surprised really, as they are intended to reduce the output of the heart, seems a bit like just blowing your bike tyres up half way to me. Once I was off them normal service was resumed, shall we say. Hope this helps.

My GP warned me of that possibility when she kind of advised me against taking Bisoprolol which had been presribed by my cardiologist. She felt that my BP was no worse than borderline and that I might suffer ED if I started taking it.

Since then I've been on Amlodipine for about 18 months and my ability to have an erection has just about disappeared! But then I'm 67 yrs old so it could be "old age".

Would be interested to hear any other experiences with BP-reducing meds in this department.......

Hello,

Was on 2.5mg of bisoprolol after initial HA, no problems in that department, couldn't get Heart rate up for exercise so it was reduced to 1.25, then taken off bisoprolol completely due to headaches feeling weak. So far been OK and 'downstairs' OK (fingers crossed!)

A concern I had when prescribed 10 mg Bisoprolol and 5 mg amlodipine.

All working fine;-)

Don't know how some of you fellas manage so well, it had the same effect on me as 6 pints of strong ale. This might make you chuckle - when I went to see the cardiac Nurse about it during rehab, she didn't realise I was on Bisoprolol, and said "Mmmm, this could be psychological, were you on the "nest" when you had Angina?" Made me laugh!

Bit mixed here.

Can be a bit like blowing up a tyre that has a slow puncture. Getting it hard isn’t a problem, keeping it that way can be. On 5mg per day.

LOL Iv'e been there! You just got to peddle harder.

I’m on 1.25 mg Bisoprolol since December last year. Getting better than before but I’ve lost a fair bit of weight, plus getting fitter so that helps as well. The morning glory is a nice surprise too...

After my heart bypass 14 months ago I complained to my cardiologist that my libido and performance had been much reduced. He said 'that would be the bisoprolol' (then on 5mg a day). He suggested an alternative beta blocker 'Nebilet' nebivolol, so I took that for a couple of months. No different, so I returned to bisoprolol but on a reduced dose (approved by the cardio) of 2.5mg.

Still not back to normal, but a little bit improved and bisoprolol is much cheaper than nebivolol - I'm overseas so no NHS and paying for my meds. When I had a full package health check 9 months ago my testosterone levels were measured and were found to be on the low side so I will be experimenting with testosterone replacement therapy once I have completed a course of treatment for BPH - an enlarged but non-cancerous prostate causing 'older-man's bladder control issues'. That was also examined under my instruction as part of the full package medical and following ultrasound examination I was passed upstairs to a urologist for further advice.

The treatment drug combo he recommended for BPH (tamsulosin/dutasteride - 'Duodart') also unfortunately creates some difficult sexual performance issues for some men - and me; eg 'retrograde ejaculation', which is wierd!

Another urologist, who happened to be a crossover urology/oncology specialist, was separately advising me on appropriate monitoring/testing for cancers in men of my age (late 60s) and spotted that I was consulting his colleague and 'stuck his oar in'. On hearing my reservations about Duodart he suggested I try 5mg of Cialis (normally used at stronger 20mg levels for ED, a la sildenafil) as a recently discovered alternative BPH controlling med. So, I will be discussing that in a couple of months time with the first urologist along with TR therapy. They are colleagues in the same hospital so I have to tread diplomatically!

Meanwhile my wife is being 'understanding' thank Dog!

I've been on 1.25 Bisop. for a few years. No problem most of the time and as an added, occasional confidence boost I've discovered that Cialis, 5mg, is super! I'm 73. And, btw, if you're not turned on by your partner then it doesn't work! So, your wife doesn't need to worry!

Thanks for ALL your honest and open replies guys AND girls.

I think whatever happens, health comes first BUT a healthy sex life can be part of a healthy mental health life so to speak.

I have discussed with my wife in case it does at any stage cause issues, it hasnt so far but only been on med for a week and had sex 3 times without issues.

Surprisingly she said if it causes problems she would rather have sex with me having a "slow puncture" than me take ED meds like cialis or viagra. Her reasoning being she wouldnt know then if i find her sexually attractive anymore as it could just be the ED medication rather than me being turned on by her???.

As a man i dont understand that at all, maybe some of the fairer sex members on here can understand her reasoning? I guess its just a man vs woman difference thing? 🙂

Anyway, thanks again!.

Hi James, I wasn't going to reply to your thread as you have had a lot of good responses but I just wanted to add to your comment on your wife not knowing if you found her attractive or if it was the meds.

I have been on hypertension meds for over 20 years and had a double heart bypass this year. Throughout all this I have had recurring issues and have used cialis and viagra. I (and my wife hopefully!) have found these meds very effective both physically and physiologically. One thing I would add though is that they don't just automatically give you an errection, they only work if you're turned on. If you're not in the mood then nothing.

I started Bisoprolol on 1.25mg and my dose has gradually increased to 10 mg daily. Erection seems to be shrinking proportionally with the increased dose.

Will be speaking to consultant next time we meet...

Not sure about Bisoprolol - not noticed any impact, but Atarvostatin was like Viagra for me! Poor wife didn’t stand a chance!

Thankfully for her, they’ve been replaced by Enzetimibe!

45 , heart attack at 41 with 2 stents and on bisoprolol. Erections got worse and soon was ejaculating whilst soft or at best semi. Doctor told me this is not uncommon. Changed me to nebivolol and all back to normal.

Hi Andrew,

When I was taking Bisoprolol (5 mg daily) for a few months, I did notice some issues with erectile dysfunction. Initially, I thought it was due to the medication, as it’s listed as a possible side effect. However, even after stopping Bisoprolol over a year ago, the problems persisted, which made me realize it probably wasn’t the cause after all. It could have been more related to other factors, like stress or underlying health issues.

That said, my doctor prescribed Viagra (Sildenafil), and it’s been a game-changer. Everything is back to working as it should, and I feel much more confident. If you’re worried, I’d suggest keeping an open line with your doctor to address any concerns early. Best of luck, and I hope Bisoprolol works well for your blood pressure without affecting your sex life!
