Bisoprolol

I've been taking Bisoprolol for over 10 years. I started getting severe nightmares where I would fight hit out and I even threw myself out of the bed. I can't sleep with my wife anymore in case I hurt her. Over the last year I have also developed low blood pressure with readings of 79/40. I also started to struggle with dizziness every time I go up bent over, went up the stairs etc. I reduced the dose and came off them last September. The nightmares went away, the blood pressure became normal again and the dizziness stopped. However, after a couple of months I started to get irregular heart beat, especially lying down so have just started taking the Bisoprolol again. The irregular heart beats have gone again. Has anyone else had similar issues with Bisoprolol?

Hello :-)

Bisoprolol is also used for irregular heart beats and maybe the cause now you have stopped them that you have started to get them

What you really need to do is talk with your Doctor they will decide if they can put you on another medication or it needs investigating but please make an appointment and find out :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I’ve not had issues with bisoprolol but have had what are called night terrors all my life until I was prescribed gabapentin for neuropathic pain when they suddenly stopped. Wonderful! For the first time in nearly 70 years I can sleep without nightmares. Apparently it’s a side effect that no one seems to know about. Best sleeping tablet there is.

Wow! Sounds awful . The only issue I had with 3.75mg of Bisoprolol was being spaced out for parts of the day. Had it reduced to 1.25 and half a 1.25mg tablet of Rampiril. No issues now. Have you asked to try Rampiril instead of Bisoprolol?

The waking up sweating, especially the head, and sleeping in the afternoon happens to me, After 3 yrs and 10 months of taking 7.5 mg every evening, But the sweating might be caused by hypoglycaemia, as I've been diagnosed with diabetes and I take meds for it which, as I managed to get my level back to prediabetic, might be the cause for the sweating, Waiting for a call back from the diabetic nurse to see what she says about halving the dose.

hi, I was put on bisoprolol when first diagnosed with an irregular heart beat and it lowered my blood pressure too much causing dizziness and nausea which stopped me from doing everyday things. It also gave me insomnia but sorted my irregular heartbeat. I’m now on ivabradine which is much better and no side effects. Hope you get sorted soon.

I've always had vivid dreams, no nightmares thank goodness, just in glorious living technicolour, as they say. However, like you, I have been on 10mg of Bisoprolol for some years and my dreams have definitely become more focused and I am remembering them more clearly. Wether this could be attributable to the medication, an age thing, or 3 years worth of injections and viruses I don't know but I would be reluctant to alter the status quo and upset my heart rate. Nowadays my dreams are a lot more interesting than being awake anyway.😴😴😊.

Yes, bisoprolol can cause nightmares though it is not very common. Stopping bisoprolol can make you worse than before you started taking it so thats why your irregular rhythm is back. Luckily betablockers isn’t the only choice for preventing irregular rhythms, theres other medication available, such as antiarrythmias and calcium channel blockers such as verapamil. Of course it all depends what you actual condition is on what your cardiologist would see best to prescribe.

bisop definitely causes vivid uncontrollable thought/dreams for me.. usually between wakefulness and sleep…also disconnecting and dis associating while awake

I reduced and stopped 2 1/2 weeks ago and things are improving but by bp shot back up after a couple of days…

I hated feeling out of control of my mind..

I’ve switched to candesartan…bp coming down but have just started with dizziness and sneezing🤦‍♀️

I’m obviously very sensitive to bp meds..

Good luck with your journey

Bisoprolol is a rate medication not an AF specific antiarrythmic medication. It acts only on high heart rate in Atrial Flutter and other rate arrhythmia. slowing the heart down, and hence blood pressure too.I can only take 1.25 mg a day or my HR goes too low. I take it alongside Flecanide my arrhythmia medication.
