Waiting room door swinging shut behind mewell: Aortic Valve and Aneurysm surgery in 10 hours!

So had call at mid-day to say bed available and Covid test negative. Packed bag before 30 min drive to hospital for 2:30 arrival.

Now settled in at Harefield Hilton - kick-off 7:30am tomorrow , pre-match warm up of shave & shower @6:30

So far it's been fine (apart from no visitor rule making for tearful drop-off):

- meet & greet - calm and smooth

- wait for bed filled with form filling and attaching of no less than 3 ID bracelets

- then more forms, coffee & choosing dinner

- canula and blood letting (matching for transfusìon being main thing)

- more forms

- nice dinner (Chicken tikka)

- chat with surgeon

- more forms (including consent etc)

- X-ray (CT scan operator gone home but one from 11 July recent enough)

- more forms (during which my companion nurse for the duration (Lola) revealed she had miss-heard my age as 66 earlier.

- chin to ankle 'front shave'

- hibiscus scrub shower

- another blood because one of the bunch taken earlier did behave properly

- possessions inventory

It seems no more tonight - not even forms.

Steve

Been there, done that mate. Just suck it up and your next phase is getting over it. It hurts for a day or two, I'm not sure if I mentioned on my day of discharge I went to the pub with my mates. I couldn't open a packet of peanuts but the Stella went down well.

Good luck Steve, you’ve got this far& probably worried yourself more as to whether it would get cancelled.

Now you can let them take over the reins! Best wishes to you

Good luck, the shave was so embarrassing for me especially when it was a Celtic fanatic shaving a Rangers fan during visiting hour!!

Hope all goes well and speedy recovery

I had the exact same surgery 7 weeks ago. Good luck.

For me, waking up after was the most part - all been gravy since then.

I know what you mean - I think the first I said to the nurse in recovery was 'so I'm alive then'

You must be done and dusted by now - how very exciting! Everyone wishes you well. I had aortic valve replacement last year and to be honest I had more pain after having my wisdom teeth out! However take it easy during your recovery it’s easy to think you can do more than you really should . Very best wishes 🙏

Hi Steve - thinking of you. Can’t wait for an update 😊

No sweat: I had the valve replaced via TAVR and 3 stents. It took 30 minutes and no anesthesia. No local and I got to watch on the monitor. Went home the next day, drive the next. Almost 4 years ago.

Good luck-I had had aortic and mitral valve sorted just as lockdown was starting to wake up in ITU when I heard staff singing "When the going gets tough" It kept everyones spirits up! Getting over it is the worse part I find myself getting quite impatient; 4months down the line Im hoping to return to work on a phased return next month

Hi Steve, hope everything went to plan. Elective operation is always best. Don't do it the way I did!
