Terrible coughing while waiting for an aortic valve replacement

My husband (64) had AF and has now been told his aortic valve needs replacing. He is waiting for the operation. My question concerns any solution anyone has found for the coughing that is wearing him out, due to fluid caused by his heart problem. He takes 1 Furosemide but was fainting on 2 so it had to be reduced to one. Any ideas anyone, please? Many thanks.

I would contact the hospital and try to get them to speed up the urgency of his operation, given that his heart failure symptoms are getting worse.

Thanks, I have. He was told to sort his teeth first. His dental treatment ends on 2 Jan. I’m just hoping for something to help him in the meantime

It is a problem when the very necessary dentistry has to delay urgent surgery, and Christmas doesn't help. Any chance of speeding up the dentistry?

Rigorous no salt diet, measuring liquids, and sleeping with several pillows can help.

I hope the surgery is as soon after January 2nd as possible.

Can he try something between his original and higher furosemide dose e.g. one every day and the second every other day? Dosing furosemide is very dependent on symptoms. My husband had a standard dose but took an extra one if his weight had risen overnight.

In any case I would go back to the doctor if you feel things are getting worse.

Thanks, we’re monitoring his body so if that goes up a bit it could be feasible

I have had an awful cough for weeks and have found an extra 20mg (in addition to 20mg )of Furosomide has helped. My cough seems to be from my throat and not chest which is clear. I also had an iron infusion last Friday as lron levels low, which may account for less coughing too. I cough as soon as air temperature changes. HF nurse seems to think cough is due to HF and suggested keep on with extra Furosomide and have bloood test after 2 weeks. Throat seemed to be helped by Strepsil honey spray.

Hope your husband feels better soon

Thanks, we’ve explored both different diuretics and 1.5 doses but the cardiologist didn’t recommend them.

He’s now seen the cardiac surgeon so he’s making progress.
