Hi, I was recently prescribed 15mg of lansoprazole. I took it for a week & stopped because I wasn't happy with what I read. Symptoms came worse (waking with severe stomach pain). Now on 30mg. I now have back pain & tingling hands & feet for a week. Any suggestions?

Lansoprazole 30mg
Hi RMM75. Has the increase been prescribed by your Doc? How long have you been taking this increased dose?
Tingling hands is a known side effect but generally after you’ve taken it for more than 3 months and you need to talk to your Doctor if that’s the case.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I was only taking it for a week on 15mg & stopped. Doctor upped the dose after I rang up & complained about bad stomach pains. Been taking 30mg for a week now & had the back pains & tingling from about day 2 on 30mg.
That’s early days for any Lansoprazole side effects but I’d give the doc a call. Did the Doc know you’d stopped taking them when you complained of stomach pains? You might just need the lower dose taken 30 mins before your breakfast and then aspirin etc after you’ve eaten (I’m assuming you’re taking the Lans as a preventative as you’re here on a heart forum). Back pains can be caused by changes to your digestive regime.
I RMM75 - I didn't get any of your symptoms on Lansoprazole however, it worsened my ectopics, tachycardia etc after I had been on it for months presumably due to it preventing the full absorption of B vitamins, magnesium, etc. I refuse to take any proton pump inhibitors now despite GP insistence. It didn't appear to help stomach issues anyway.
Now I have calmed my stomach issues using home made fermented foods - sauerkraut and kefir (with added tumeric and cinnamon) it wasn't an overnight 'cure' but has made a big difference after having daily kefir (very easy to make) and Sauerkraut a few times per week.
Thanks for the reply. I agree, quite annoyed I blindly followed the prescription & can't wait to come off them, just worried about the acid reflux effect it can cause when you come off them as I was quite rough when I stopped for a few days after being on themfor just a week. Never had a major digestive issue before, I was prescribed them after I complained about constant chest pains, which I thought may have been down to stress due to the current situation in the world.
It may be worth eating smaller, blander, meals and not eating after 7pm at night for a while if you come off them to limit acid reflux. I didn't have too much bother coming off them - I did drink a lot of water for a few weeks and don't know if that helped. Dr Michael Mosleys 'clever guts diet' book was handy (I think you can get it as a kindle ebook) and I think it was this and a bit of you tube research that got me into eating a more Mediterranean style diet with kefir and sauerkraut (home made as the bought stuff is usually unpleasant and also pasteurised which defeats the object). Kefir is really easy to make overnight - you just need milk kefir grains from amazon or wherever, it brews overnight - - just add the grains to milk in a covered glass bowl/jar and waits till it starts to separate. -it worked really well with my stomach. Sauerkraut is great but takes longer 3 -6 weeks and really needs an airlock lid on a container. It does taste nice as you can add other herbs, spices etc into it. Both are supposed to be really helpful in turning around out of balance gut flora and fauna!! Both need to be started on slowly or they can have dramatic effects on the bowels!!!!
Beat of luck!!
Can you just stop lansoprazole or do you need to wean off it
I took it for a week & stopped & suffered from really bad stomach pains for a few days , so presume some kind of weaning off is needed.
My cardiologist prescribed low dose earlier this year following ablation. (I'm not sure why) Only needed to take it now & then but, no side effects.
