Virtual Fish 'n' Chip Lunch

Update - It was fairly quiet yesterday evening so there is a lot of virtual fish left over. Rather than waste it we will be opening at mid-day for a few hours.

P. S. It is Saturday today not Sunday or Monday or any other day.

Many people have a traditional Fish 'n' Chip supper on Good Friday because it is a Friday or because of religious beliefs. Following the success of the Virtual BBQ I will be hosting a Virtual Fish 'n' Chip Supper here from 6:00pm. There will be no meat (e.g. sausages, savaloies, kebabs, etc.) or feel fried Mars Bars (too naughty)...

If you have any Barr's Cream Soda I will think I've won the lottery, Michael! Or Sprite. Or water. Whatever is easiest:)

Here you are - yours was fried in sunflower oil rather than the beef dripping. Glad you asked for soya milk as we have run out of almond and oat milks!

MichaelJH profile image

Seems a quiet night! I will turn off the fryer now! Good night all!

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star

There is plenty left over so might turn on the fryers tomorrow lunch time.

For many years I used to have fish'n' chips on a Good Friday in one of the Archs' cafes in Westcliff. Outside if it wasn't raining as a suntrap!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star

I once was driving past a monestry and saw a sign "Free Fish 'n' Chips for Weary Travellers". I pulled in and one of the best fish suppers I had ever had. Afterwards I said to one of the monks "Are you the fish fryer?" "No" he replied "I am the chip monk"!

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply to MichaelJH

Ok, that has me laughing out loud. The chip monk, I'll be giggling about that the rest of the evening!

I've got Father Brown on Drama Channel - one more episode after this one and I'm calling it a night.

Thank-you again for these virtual events, Michael, every one you throw does take some of the self-isolating stress off.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Sunnie2day

I think it was a bit quiet today as people are losing track of the day! 🤣

Not surprising, I keep thinking it's Saturday, I have since the last week of March.

The small village next to ours did a wonderful thing last week. The Chippie, although now closed, and friends delivered 150 free fish and chip suppers to the old and infirm people in the village. Such a pity we don't live in that village.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Qualipop

This happened a few weeks ago and I was looking forward to a "naughty" fish supper" only to be told a few hours before I was outside their delivery radius! ☹️

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Qualipop

P. S. I would have walked to the circumference as it was only a few hundred yards! 🚶

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply to MichaelJH

Ah well I'm half a mile away so I didn't even ask. Actually I don't like fish and chips LOL but I Thought it was a lovely kind thing to do. That village ahs done loads to help their local elderly. Our village? Absolutely nothing

marigoldb profile image

Great, Saturday lunchtime, what could be better than sausages and chips. Any chance of some baked beans? All to be washed down with a Guinness if possible please?

Meanwhile I’m just going to plant my runner bean seeds in a tray.

Enjoy the sunshine!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to marigoldb

We didn't do sausages last night but being virtual I can get some in. Would you prefer pork sausages, saveloies or frankfurters?

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to MichaelJH

Have you done a runner with your runners marigoldb ?

marigoldb profile image
marigoldb in reply to MichaelJH

Pork sausages every time! When you open up again of course!

Yes planted the runners, been pottering around doing something and nothing really! One of those days!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to marigoldb

Hi, we are now frying again!

S11m profile image
S11m

Our chip shop was open until recently - I think he closed because he could no longer get fish or potatoes delivered.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to S11m

Virtually all the people that said they would operate on a takeaway/delivery basis seemed to stop in the first week!

S11m profile image
S11m in reply to MichaelJH

I think we still have English and Indian restaurants doing takeaways.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to S11m

I think an Indian is operating a few miles away. They so a takeaway service at lunch time (burgers, etc.) for a large industrial estate next door and passing trade. In the evening it is all change and they become a delivery Indian. I doubt there is any lunchtime trade but think with others closing they will be very busy.

Good Morning It's still breakfast time in my bit of the world...Waterloo Canada. So I have made a good sized stack of pancakes to share with everyone. There is some fresh local Maple syrup and whip cream to go on top. Enjoy!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to puddingandpie

I will try one as a dessert, thank you. Just starting on my jumbo cod with two gherkins! Is your area on lock down?

puddingandpie profile image
puddingandpie in reply to MichaelJH

We are limited but maybe not as much as my friend in London yet. Businesses closed. So I have lots of time if you need me to made up a second batch of pancake. Here is some lemon and sugar if that is more to people taste.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to puddingandpie

Ready now.! My favourite topping is oranges simmered with a dash of Contreau! 😋

We are lucky here - the cafe near the fish market in Peterhead is still open at lunchtime and evenings doing takeaways so we managed a fish supper eaten in the car watching the boats!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Janma123

About five years ago we had a brilliant one open in the next village. We loved going on a summer's evening and parking up a few hundred yards away to watch the local cricket team. Sadly after two years there was a change of management and profit rather than customer satisfaction became the driver! With CVD and a bypass I haven't been since but I have been told there has been a further change of management but no improvement. ☹️

Janma123 profile image
Janma123 in reply to MichaelJH

We are very lucky here to get the freshest of fish usually landed that day and have many excellent chippers around.

Hope you all enjoy Easter as best you can under the circumstances. Very quiet here in Oz. Down to 2c tonight in Canberra. Cheers Al

Any last minute orders? We close in 30 minutes! Need a 😴 after slaving over a hit fryer!

Are you serving gin? The heat is giving me a headache or maybe I have a slight case of anatadaephobia or something - the fear of geese reading my thoughts even though I am miles away from them.

MichaelJH profile image

Not really but as we are just closing here is a complimentary Duck & Crutch Gin, a bottle of Fever Tree tonic and a bag of chips. Enjoy!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Amylondon

Basically heart disease is worrying for many sufferers and their relatives and friends. The current pandemic has would this up to another level. Isolating and distancing add to the stress.

These virtual gatherings help take people's minds off their worries for a while. They have the approval of both HU and the BHF. Whether you chose to participate is your personal decision.

Hello Milkfairy

Thank you for your response, however I’m fully aware of the purpose of this & other types of health forums as I have said being a heart failure patient myself. Maybe I suggest that you step back a little before sending messages out to new members questioning that in some way I may have a issue, I find that quite intimidating & disrespectful to be honest, I think you also have to be reminded that some 17k are members on this forum & I’m sure plenty are on here just like me who have currently not posted

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply to Amylondon

I am sorry you feel this way.

Several members are Heartstars and the BHF admin ask us to respond to others so not overstepping the mark

I am sorry if you feel my comments were not required or you are offended in anyway.

I hope you find what you are seeking on the forum.

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply to Amylondon

I'm not sure what I find more disturbing about your posts - that you thought them appropriate, or that two people up-ticked your comment(s). Sock puppets, much?

It is standard on message board forums to scroll past posted discussions a person has no interest in, why you have chosen to attack not one but two of the most supportive HeartStars on a discussion meant to ease the social isolation during the coronavirus crisis is simultaneously sad and frankly infuriating. If you aren't interested in the discussion, why bother commenting - why not scroll past and find something more to your taste?

I find these virtual gatherings exceptionally helpful as I cope with not just receiving The Letter (putting me into self-isolation until June) but the social isolation I've been in since my heart wobble that began in March 2019. I honestly cannot wrap my head around someone like you trying to drop a toad in the virtual punch bowl, I really cannot.

I had to stop looking at the site yesterday in frustration with some pointless comments (like yours). 24 hours on I'm feeling the frustration rising again.

Thanks for that (not).

Amylondon profile image
Amylondon in reply to Sunnie2day

First of all thank you for sharing your thoughts with me unfortunately on this occasion we seem to disagree however where we do agree is that ALL heart patients whether in self isolation or not are going through difficult & challenging times alike.

What I have learnt in such a short period being a member is that some clearly on here don’t appear to like being questioned /challenged / disagree regarding their post but yet happy themselves to question my integrity & seemingly think the only way to respond is to imply that I seem to have some other agenda, no just a different opinion to one’s own.

Also may I point out to you because someone who takes the time to like ones message doesn’t necessarily mean that these as you suggest as being a “Sockpuppet” A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception that in its self what you have implied is insulting to the ones who liked my message & would be clearly against the forums rules.

Take Care

Thank you for your response Michael however I’m not quite sure why you felt it necessary to explain how heart disease can effect one’s daily lives, whether being the patient or a family member, I know to well how debilitating these conditions can be, mine being heart failure.

Secondly maybe HU have got it wrong on this occasion with there approval as you suggest that fellow heart patients find this sort of nonsense comforting or in some way takes our minds of the condition we live with, I hope HU/BHF have a rethink.

Hi Michael. As I don't get notifications until the day after posting, can you let me know when you are next turning on the fryer, please? Tofish & chips would go down nicely, but I need to know when to expect it, so that I don't stuff myself with pizza & garlic bread beforehand :)
