Hi all, first time poster, I’m currently 19 years old and waiting for open heart surgery but I’m desperate for a piercing but the doctors “advised” me not to have anymore just in case I catch Endocarditis but I already have my ears Pierced and I never caught that, what are your thoughts

Hi marie_17

I'm sure that you know the answer to your question already. If your doctor has "advised" you against it, I would accept that he/she has a greater medical knowledge on the subject, and notwithstanding that you are desperate for a piercing, your health should take priority.

The is a support forum for people with heart issues and none of us are medically qualified to suggest a course of action. I'm pretty certain that none of us would suggest you disregard the opinion put forward by your dcotor.

TRUST ME ---- YOU DO NOT WANT ENDOCARDITIS

Dont be an idiot. The last thing you need now is any form of infection. Get a grip!

Erm excuse me I wasn’t talking about having one done now, I was talking about in the future

I'm afraid your wording " I’m desperate for a piercing" does imply you want it now. :)

Yeah but I didn’t say now, just because I’m desperate doesn’t mean I want one now

No! Don't risk missing your surgery.

Hello. Marie, you have plenty of time for piercings! Have your surgery and when you are recovered then maybe think about getting one. Your health is much more important.

Re your comment about having your ears pierced I can only share with you the experience one of my students had: she was thrilled with her pierced ears and so went back to the same place and person for a navel piercing. The resultant infection took over six weeks to clear up and it dripped pus continuously. Poor girl kept saying "why me?" and "but I've got pierced ears". Somehow it became infected; could have been at the shop or at home or her from her own fingers. It's up to you but keep it in mind someone with years of medical training has mentioned it is not a good idea and it is a risk to your heart; your choice. Get it done, if you want to after your surgery.

This is a time to be conservative, your health comes first. You're so young, plenty of time after your recovery to have fun xx

Please don’t. Not now. Not before your surgery. Still plenty of time for you to do it when all this crap is over.

You’ll matter far too much to someone to take an extra risk.

No please don’t do now, but definitely plan to have it done as soon as your surgery is over and you have fully recovered. Remember your surgeon will make sure you’re not wearing any jewellery, nail polish, or makeup before you even enter the theatre, because all these have the ability to harbour bacteria. And a new piercing will be an unheralded wound itself. Follow the advice and please come back and tell us when you’re op is over, you’ve recovered, AND when you’ve got your long awaited piercing. Wishing you all the best 😊
