Since my husband had heart failure in April , we had some all the do's , Barts, tests, meds etc like anyone else with this health problem. But what we cannot seem to get to the bottom of is blocked hearing on one ear thst comes and go's but mostly comes and stays. It driving him mad as its very irritating. Gets worse if he exerts himself or has a hot bath. This has been happening since April 🙄 also his eyes water and he coughts up mucus. None of this happened before. Perfect health and hearing.
Saw consultant last week who was a bit mortified as to why its happening🙄
He would feel so much better if we could heal this problem . One course of antibiotics from GP did nothing.
Has anyone else experienced this ???

I have to say this was a new one to me in that I’d not heard of a link between HA (or cardio vascular disease) and hearing loss, but if you go on the net there does seem to be quite a lot of info (I will not vouch for the accuracy of it but the fact it’s there suggests there is a link). Just as a thought, have you tried to see an ENT consultant (rather than your cardiology one)?
Could it be Eustachian Tube Dysfunction ? I have this in both ears which comes and goes.
Hi, I get blocked ears too when exercising and have reached the stage where I am ignoring it. Just one of those things that I have to live with now 😊. Helps to know that others have this too..
Yes! I had severe heart failure & really suffered with blocked ears, like I was under water! Like your husband, my very experienced cardiologist had never heard of it, but one of the HF nurses had known someone who also suffered from it. I was referred to an ENT consultant & underwent several audiological tests, all of which shoes I had perfect hearing! The ENT consultant told me most people get used to it - try chewing gum!! Interestingly, I could make it go away every time by lying down, or even just tilting my head all the way to the side.
Personally I believe it got worse when I was overloaded with fluid and improved when my diuretics were increased to remove the fluid. Is your husband on diuretics? Several of my previous drugs had side effects linked to hearing - ringing in the ears, etc. Since my heart transplant in March the issue has completely gone, and I’m still on lower dose of the same diuretic, so probably not that.
I hope you get it sorted. I feel your frustration! It might be worth looking into the side effects of your husband’s drugs, just in case any of them could be changed to alleviate the problem. Good luck!
I don't think loss of hearing is uncommon. After my husband's quad bypass in November, his left ear was affected for 5 months. He likened it to his ear being bunged up with water. One day at the end of April, he could suddenly hear again. Weird!!
He suffered with coughing up mucous too and that led to a GP visit in March (GP said it was a virus that would eventually go away!!). Well it didn't.
A further visit in June showed a major chest infection and antibiotics cleared it up.
Our best wishes to you both. I hope this gets sorted out soon. It must be very hard on you too. xxx
