Since being laid off in June on ill health capability grounds, I am struggling to get work again. I can get an interview but then I’m asked if I have a disability or health conditions which I declare because if you don’t they can get rid of you for lying. I have been given a no everytime, I appreciate that maybe there is someone better for the job at times but I’m starting to get paranoid that the real reason is because of my heart!
Has anyone else had a problem getting work because of health?

Dont give up, there are plenty of employers who do not discriminate on ANY grounds - including health.
If I were you I would phone those companies who you have been unsuccessful with and ask for feedback as to why you did not get their jobs and ask if there is anything you could improve on.
As others have said: Don't give up! I have been out of work a few times and it is not unusual for me to have applied for 200+ jobs to get one (I keep records). I often got interviews but there is "always" someone better qualified, like you said.
Also, I wouldn't jump in at the first job offer. I have done so and wound up in some awful jobs. Check the company out fully first. Ask current employees, if possible. I wouldn't completely trust online reviews as they will be filled predominantly with disgruntled people. Although enough bad reviews can be a big indicator.
At an interview, I think that its best to say that you are in good health, which is true isn't it? But I guess that you need to declare time off work, but I don't think that you need to give more details then illness.
I'm sure that you will find work soon if you keep at it
Hi. I’m not sure that’s always true. The 2010 Equality Act prevents discrimination on the basis of disability (a long-term physical/mental impairment that has an adverse effect on normal day-to-day activities). To be covered the individual would have to make the case that they’re disabled. Of course that could be the case for kirsty131. But it’s not illegal to discriminate on the grounds of ill health. The ethics of it is, of course, a different matter.
You’re not joking. It is very unfair. But good employers will recognise the fact that we’re less of a risk now our conditions are known than many others whose conditions haven’t yet surfaced.
True - but HR depts know the rules better than anyone. They’ll never openly admit if someone was ruled out for a reason that might connect to discrimination.
I remained off work for 3 months with Dilated Cardiomyopathy,it caused me concern if I would be able to drive, work again etc.I knew my first priority was to hopefully get better on the medications I had been prescribed,I slowly started feeling better and returned to work.I am fortunate in that I work in a semi physical job.(My Employer offered to reduce my hrs, but I felt ok to start back full time).I was initially diagnosed with a Heart Ejection Fraction of 30% in December 2016,48% in May 2017,then 55% in July 2018.I walk as much as possible, still get tired, but no where near as much as previously. The medications have worked very well for me,given me a much better quality of life. The Consultant is pleased and says that I need to remain on them.(No big deal). Some of us have to fight our own demons.
