Hi, I've just been in hospital for eight days with breathing problems, Shortness of breath and irregular heart beat.
My diagnosis is I need to have an ICD fitted. I'm sure someone here has had it done, so just a few questions if I may. How long did you have to wait? Do you feel the benefit of having it done and in what way? Thanks in advance.

Hi, there's many people on here who've had ICD's fitted, however, there are different types of ICD's. My husbands ICD does not alleviate any symptoms it will simply try to correct his heart or deliver a shock if necessary. Other ICD's can pace the heart & there are some that resynchronise your heart. Do you know which one you're having fitted? The fitting of them is fairly straight forward, takes about an hr or so. Depending on why you're having it fitted you may go home the same day, my husband was kept in overnight, they're always very cautious with him. You will have to stop driving for a period of time, the length is dependant on why you're having it fitted. Be sure to ask if you can have a home monitor, this picks up & downloads all the info from the ICD & sends it daily to your ICD clinic. There's a closed Facebook page called ICD-crtd support group that will be able to advise you far better than I can with my limited knowledge. The one thing I can say is, knowing you are being monitored 24/7 is a great comfort if you are able to have the home monitor. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
