Vitamin Tablets - Can we take them?

Hi All

Prior to my angioplasty I was taking Vitamin B complex, Vitamin D and Vitamin C tablets. I have asked if I can take three again and have been met with mixed reviews.

Are any of you taking the above after having angioplasty?

Kind regards

Tracy 😊

I have found the view on vitamin tablets varies between doctors and consultants. Some will say that you do not need them if you eat a balanced diet despite the fact that many modern storage/handing processed can seriously reduce vitamin content. Like my self your arteries narrowed (you have had angioplasty and I am awaiting a bypass). There is research that shows cholesterol can be deposited when your body tries to deal with irritated artery linings, of which there are many causes. So the body in trying to heal itself actually causes damage. Irritation of the blood vessels is associated with scurvy that affected old time sailors on longer voyages. They were given lime juice (Vitamin C) for this - hence the expression 'limeys'. I started taking Vitamin C for this very reason. Most medical people I have told about this seemed not that interested by a few were. So it is, as you say, a mixed reception. Unless there is a definite no, I was told this about iron tablets, although I am borderline anaemic, I would take them.

Thank you for your reply. Love reading the history behind it all. I will have a chat to a pharmacist tomorrow as I few I could do with some vitamins even though I do eat a good diet.

Regards and thanks again

Hi Tracy. I follow a strict vegan diet so have to take Vit B12 which is prescribed. I also take Vit D as I live in the North East (frozen north!!) this isn’t prescribed but self medicated. You may want to discuss with your pharmacist who have greater knowledge of contra indications. Hope this helps.

Best wishes Zena

I decided to start myself on a multi vitamin tablet when I was discharged from hospital after a long illness. I did not have an angioplasty. It is very important that I try to stay infection free so anything that might help is worth it .I eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit and veg. I have to take a multi vitamin without vit K as I am on warfarin long term. I got my tabs from the local health food shop who were very helpful.

Don't know if it's a coincidence but since having them I have got through this winter with only one cold.

Good luck with the angioplasty and hope you feel soon.
