back pain - steroid injection

I’ve always suffered with joint pain and back pain. I had a steroid injection on 16th September and over the weekend my lower back pain has come back with avengence.

How long are steroid injections meant to ease your pain? Is this normal for it to have worn off already

Hi Welsh92, as a rule I stopped replying to unlocked posts. However there are many topics that I can identify with, steroid back injections are something I have experienced on 4 occasions now.

I have mentioned my experiences in my own posts including my appointment with the London COE.

Specifically the back injections have never lasted more than 3 weeks, but they gave me a level of relief and normality that preceded all my disabilities and gave a feeling of normality.

Have a look at my posts for a better understanding of how Behcets and blood cancer have affected me.

In the meantime I wish you well and hope you can find some lasting relief from your symptoms.

My regards

Thank you ever so much for your response I do appreciate it.

I’ll take a look! That’s how I felt, for the first two weeks it gave me so relief and normality to the point I was able to walk my dog and do things with my children, however now it’s worn off I feel I need something longer lasting. I suppose I was being nice thinking it would last longer.

Yes, that’s how I felt on every occasion, euphoric fantastic. My last procedure was nerve denervation I was led to believe that I would get a year or more relief.

However the procedure did not take account of my diagnosed Spondylolisthesis, which is a fractured vertebrae and forward slip.

I was left in back extension and agony throughout the procedure and just made things worse with no follow up appointments.

Oh gosh I’m so sorry to hear about that, that must have been absolutely awful for you to have gone through. That is one thing I’m worried about, if they don’t look at the whole picture and how much damage they can do. I’m going to seek advice from my GP tomorrow regarding my back pain and fortunately he has studied immunology so I’m hoping he may be more understanding of what I’m suffering with and can then advise properly

Hi again. I would be interested to know if your back pain and any other joint pain has been blamed on your Behcets.

The situation for me now after more than 40 years of joint and muscle pain which was always blamed on my Behcets.

More recently a Rheumatologist has claimed that all my joint issues are down to osteoarthritis and in his words I have not had Behcets for decades.

Have you ever been told your joint problems are nothing to do with Behcets?

At the moment I’m still undergoing “possibly Behçet’s although… I have all of the symptoms genital ulcers mouth ulcers etc and everything else has been ruled out. Physio have said it’s because of Behçet’s, most GPs and prior rheumatologist put it down to fibro however I haven’t had a recent MRI or scan on my back and it’s definitely not never pain, it’s deeper than that, I can literally feel my spine and my hips/pelvic area and they are always so hot to touch when they get like this. I have wondered what sort of scan would show something, I’m not sure whether it would be MRI or dexa bone scan? Just found out my GP appointment is cancelled until another week 🙄🙄

Yes I now recall your earlier post about awaiting a diagnosis, but your symptoms very much fit the Behcets criteria especially the ulcer symptoms.

I hope you will soon get a proper diagnosis and treatment for all your symptoms especially your back as I know just how debilitating it can be.

Take care

Hi Welsh92,

It sounds similar to the kind of lower back pain attacks I get. I’ve been giving this quite a bit of thought and to me it feels like BD is attacking the sacroiliac joint. In my case these attacks can be sudden and brutal if I come into contact with the “right” trigger for this symptom. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to test for joint attacks in BD. The inflammation is not visible on scans or ultrasound in my experience. The only way would be to have a biopsy ideally right upon the onset of the attack. Not sure what doctor would be willing to do it though. I have not been able to convince any of them to do biopsies to test for local inflammation like in an organ or joint where I had pain. It’s all very frustrating. Please write back if you manage to figure something out. Good luck.
