Food Triggers

My husband is in the middle of an appalling flare. Honestly I can’t believe how dreadful this disease is. He’s got the most appalling mouth sores, again, hives on his face and genital sores.

I think some of it is food triggers. I try to keep him fairly healthy. However I/we are convinced it’s pineapple and or nuts! We had some last weekend, and another flare has happened. Not saying it’s only that, but it seems pineapple and nuts are in issue for him.

I wondered is anyone had found a link to this at all?

You are all so strong! 💖💙

Hello! I hope your husband feels better soon. I can talk about pineapple. I love it but get mouth sores ( but my daughter as well and she does not have Behcet’s). One doctor told me once that the acidity of the pineapple digests ( yes, that is the word he used) our mouth leading to the sores. I am honestly not sure about that but I wanted to share. I used to have painful and too many sores when I was a child and they got better but unfortunately in the last month or so the mouth sores are back and I only relate them to my stress level but thank you for the post as I will pay more attention on food ( Behcet symptoms started at 2, diagnosis age 29). You mentioned skin… I also have been having weird very red dots in my face and last year I had a very very bad what was called dermatitis on my face. I have never had anything like that. So, I spent some money and bought a mask (LED Dr Gross) that has blue led and it helped a lot. Not sure if it makes sense for what your husband has or can even make a flare up worst but Behcet’s can be complicated and I honestly gave up of the specialists putting two and two together. So I had access to several great doctors that are unable to collaborate with each other and to understand Behcet’s so it looks like I have “several” different “little” things going on. My apologies for the big response. Take good care of yourself

So sorry to learn of your husbands awful flare. I’ve tried elimination diets, so far, to no avail. Recently I had pineapple and now I have a mouth sore. I’m now wondering about the connection? Thanks for sharing about this. Since Bechets is the only disease that gets better with age, my mouth sores are less troublesome as I just turned 78 years old. I used to get six giant ones at a time. I was born with very painful eye problems, and mouth sores. I am very lucky, no other symptoms except for some rare but awful skin problems, from tiny red blotches, to two inch round (red) circles with pus in the middle, very painful. I did have a strange problem with my scalp when I was in my twenties, it looked like dry cracked earth, except for being white. It was treated with liquid prednisone, and vitamin B. My eyes still swell off and on. They always react to extreme swings in weather. (Something we frequently have in New York City.) If the temperature varies 30 degrees over night, my eyes feel like a cheese grater is passing over them. It gets better as the day goes on. If I have eye flares, I wake up with them in the morning. The external parts of my eyes swell, not the internal. This issue never starts, but sometimes ends later in the day. Of course, no eye specialists have an answer. (Bechets is too rare with idiosyncratic symptoms that makes it very difficult for science to grapple with, not enough samples for comparison.) I do get ocular migraines, no pain, black spots in one or both eyes, only once did a bright stage light trigger complete blindness. In the vernacular it’s called, “snow blindness.”. People exploring the Antarctica get it. It lasts up to an hour. Very scary. My niece gets ocular migraines, she has no other symptoms. I’m wondering about this ocular migraine issue, it might not be related to Bechets. In general, Bechets is such a difficult, painful and peculiar disease, only we who have it can keep informing each other in hopes of landing on something that helps. I am wondering about the connection to the digestive system, since our mouths are part of it. Just thinking about all this feels daunting, but it’s nothing compared to flares. We can only hope a cure comes along by accident!!! That can happen. Keep the faith.
