Does colchicine cause bloody stools? I saw my GP yesterday and he said I have an infection and I think my body isn't fighting it. Does anyone have experience with this in in so much pain I can't stand it

Colchicine and Stools
I don’t recall blood in the stools as a side effect but abdo pain, nausea and diarrhoea are common with colchicine. The rule of just starting colchicine is to “start low and go slow” with increasing the dose so your body can adjust and tolerate any nausea. We did this with our daughter who is only on 1/2 tablet one day, alternating with 1 tablet the next day. Behçet’s Ulcers in the bowel can cause blood in the stool. Sounds like a bit more investigating may be needed if GP thinks it is an infection and if not improving.
Hi I have used Colchicine for some time now, never experienced bloody stools from it, however do have loose stools from using colchicine. Hope you get to the bottom of this regards
Yes is the answer to your question, blood in stools is a rare side effect and if you have recently started this medication I would suggest if not already checked that you have a liver and kidney function test, lots of people who take colchicine have no issues at all, but for me I did have a reaction within I think around 6 or so weeks of starting the medication, my liver enzymes had gone well out of range and took a long time to recover, after contacting my consultant she immediately took me off the medication and yet I had been advising the GP how I did not feel right, so contact your consultant if you have not already. Having blood in your stool will require a full investigation, this happened to me. The following provides all side effects of colchicine, although my GP said he would have expected the dose I was given for Behcet's would not have caused such a reaction.

Hi, so I had rectal bleeding and quite badly - the colchicine was actually thought to help this. Like others I was investigated and nothing was found. I found lots of reassuring posts about the bleeding on the forum as something that can happen with Behcets so these may be helpful via a search. I haven’t had the bleeding since stabilising on the colchicine. Best wishes.
